the dial gauge method is very good, mostly used in engines where the adjustment screw is deep buried or requires more trouble to adjust (old MB engines or even the F6A suzuki engine)
the feeler method is perfect in your given case. just be sure where the manual specifies the clearance to be measured. e.g. the CB23-37 daihatsu engines required the clearances to be checked between the camshaft profile and rocker face.
