I service my own ACs every year just before summer. It can take a couple of hours per AC depending on how much dust is stuck in the coils. I've never taken pictures, may be next time when I do it, I will take some pictures and post them here.
I've serviced Mitsubishi Mr slim, Mitsubishi heavy duty, Samsung, Haier and Dawlance. Almost all split ACs open the same way. The screws are more or less in the same place. Step by step this is what you need to do.
- Remove filters and clean
- Take off top cover (usually held by 3 screws on the bottom part of the cover. Top cover is also held in place by plastic tabs. Take care not to break the tabs.)
- Once you have access to the coils, use a vacuum cleaner attached with a small brush to suck the dirt out the coils.
(Next step is removing crossflow fan. You can skip this step if crossflow fan appears to be clean. If it has dirt stuck on the edges and you get uneven airflow, then you must clean it. If you don't want to clean it by removing it, then just use the vacuum cleaner brush to clean the fins.)
Cross flow fan removal procedure.
4. Remove screws holding the cooling coils in place from the far end.
6. Remove the drip pan under the coils.
7. Remove bolt holding cross flow fan to the motor. (the bolt is difficult to spot. It has to be accessed by inserting a screwdriver within a gap in the crossflow fan next to the motor. Turn the crossflow fan and keep an eye on the part connected to the motor. You will spot the bolt)
8. Slowly lift the cooling coils and remove the crossflow fan. (do not use a lot of force while lifting the coils or you may damage them. Just lift enough so you can remove the crossflow fan through the gap.
9. Give the crossflow fan a good rinse with a hose, until it is clean.
10. Remove outdoor unit cover and use a dust blower on the coils. If you want you can also rinse with water after removing the outdoor fan (just open the bolt in the centre, fan comes off.) COVER FAN MOTOR WITH PLASTIC BAG BEFORE RINSING THE OUTDOOR UNIT. Don't use a lot of water pressure. Personally, I rarely service the outdoor. If there's a lot of dust stuck in there then do it, otherwise just skip it.
Clean everything. Installation is reverse of removal procedure. The most difficult part of the service is the removal and reinstallation of cross flow fan. If you don't want to get into the hassle of removal, then just vacuum it.
