I was very happy to see that the side panels had been brushed and clearcoated. One of Basit's signature moves. This way rust does not attack a bare surface.

The 64 rear bonnet/decklid had been scrapped and put onto the car though the post 68 rear apron remained. Yummy yummy...the old bug shape!

The 64 doors were being worked upon. I remember shouting on this website that some one rescue the car!! It was a running car with upto date taxes and papers but sadly no one showed interest. It yielded many parts for my project.....like half a car!

Look at the doors.....not even a single patch underneath. Pristine untouched condition tho some rot at the bottom.....ah well 2009 minus 1964 is???? How many years??

You mentioned sandblasting in this thread, my question will it wipe out the rust or not?

And what about the post 68 clips that were grafted on?

And about the interior, will you go for the cloth as the car originally had or vinyl?

And update on the dashboard?

A closeup of the door outer handle fitting area.....

This accepts the 1960 to mid 1966 door handle which has a square push button. Close but not correct for a 1959 car.

Judging by the scratches on the door, basit must have done one hell of a sandpaper/filing job on the door...

Sorry that you lost the text. A suggestion for you and all who type out long posts.....type the text in Word format and keep on saving after every few lines....that way you are protected against server goofups AND loadshedding!! I have learnt this the hard way too!

Its nice to see that you are taking keen interest in this thread. Perhaps you too have the "VW Germs" hidden deep inside??

Yes the parts hunted with so much initial effort make the job possible now. I did not mention sandblasting though its something I would want to try out. For now the denter is cleaning the metal before rust takes hold and clearcoats with a varnish. Seals the air out.

You would see the fate of the post 68 clips soon!


Im very very impressed with you RB!! How did you know about cloth and vinyl interiors???? You have done your research!! 59 bugs came with vinyl upholstery on the seats and side panels though the roof linner was a special cloth....an original sample found on this car can be seen earlier on in this thread.

The dash is all steel. Needs some repairs to make it presentable.

 I have not had a chance to see first hand what is used for this......what grade of sandpaper/files/grinder.


 The paint is stripped off using a handheld kerosene oil (I believe)  fed blowtorch which does not have a very high temperature flame (unlike the one used for welding)

A stripped 66 vintage front bonnet. Its correct for a 59 apart from two minor details which most people dont know!! :-# Anyone who tells me what these are would be a VW buff in my sight!

The bonnet again was ultra clean!!! Pristine with just a little bang on the nose. This came off a ultra clean car which I saw in pieces at Shershah . Definitely worth rescuing.....

The front LHS. The quarter panel has been cleaned up. The door pillar needs attention.

King pin/Link pin front beam.

The rear LHS quarter panel. It shows evidence of repairs which must have been carried out years back.....

Back in the older days, denters used lead/solder to fill up defects in the bodywork. The famous body filler/bondo/"puttin" came later as a cheap, conveneint, labor saving alternative.


This area needs attention.

A 65 converted with post 68 fenders and bumpers. This car might be for sale as the owner has left the resto idle, anyone interested can give me a shout...... member msm has seen this bug....

The 69 mentioned earlier. This was a clone of Devilspassion black 70 bug much to his disgust as his car was copied. its undergoing a stripdown and rebuild again. Has reportedly a custom 1800cc engine!
