Nice article. I have to say though, the writer seems a bit bitter with the Mitsu. Obviously, if "hard-core" 4x4 drivers who know proper off-roading techniques are not driving Pajeros, you can't really say much for its performance in the hands of amateurs. There are videos of people who've gotten HMMVs stuck while other's continue on with Audi Quattro road cars. Does that mean the Hummer is bad off-road? Not really, it's just that the driver doesn't know how to exploit its full potential. I've said elsewhere that the Hummer needs left foot braking to load up its differentials, otherwise, it's like it has open diffs.
As for the reference that the Rally Pajero hasn't got anything in common with the road Pajero. At the start, I think they were quite similar, save a few suspension mods and roll cages etc. But as the years progressed, to keep an edge, and conforming to the regulations, it started to deviate from the road vehicle. Witness the Lancer Evolution family (the Impreza as well BTW), originally made for production-based group A rallying, it was adapted to conform to less restrictive WRC rules and even there, it was very successful.
Unlike Toyota, Honda and Nissan, Mitsubishi has always had its roots in rallying, so I think they do know a few things about making off road vehicles.
