Some sellers are asking for outrageous prices online nowadays.

Sorry for jumping in your discussion.

In my opinion, there are three reasons behind such ads:

1. Seller is desperately searching for a fool. Bethay bithae kisi tarah mera Chakka (sixer) lag jye

2. Ad is fake and the seller switches off his mobile right away. Given for fun sake only or to seek attention.

3. Ad placed with a very high demand just to get a reasonably good offer. Shall not sell but keep on telling other people that I have already received an offer of x amount for my car, but I shall not sell it below y amount. (And thereby having a fake sense of pride.)

I saw another 1st Gen 1987 with a 4D56 manual SWB asking for 1.5 million here in Lahore. Outrageous!!

Not exactly outrageous... Mint gen2 which were for 15 are now 2.5 ish. All vehicles are expensive

These old SUVs aren't exactly hot selling vehicles and have a heavy recurring maintenance cost. Such appreciation in price is unjustified.

Be that as it may, but the general trend in the market is such that mint vehicles are rare, and when the supply is less and the demand is more, price hike is definitely there.
So many jeep clubs, so many people just want suvs for social stature, so many people want own an suv as it's there childhood dream.... So there is a demand, I was in the market for a few months looking for clean suvs, no 80 series worth buying was under 25, no 70 series worth buying was under 18, no gen2 pajero worth buying was under 22...
In the end I got sick of it and just compromised on a few things and bought what I believed to be the best bang for the buck

I am faced with the same dilemma honestly. Searching the market for an old SUV. Never owned a SUV before and so I have no idea what I will get myself into if I buy an old one. So many questions on my mind like...will I be able to daily drive it? Will it break down while I am traveling with the family on it. Will it be comfortable and what would be the financial impact in terms of maintenance and fuel compared to my other car?
I have figured that these questions will only get answered once the process starts lol. And so I am looking for a first gen pajero in order to start the process and then maybe climb up the SUV generation ladder. I have test driven a few Pajeros and Surfs so far..only found 1 1st Gen UK model Pajero with a V6 that was worth buying but had a Quetta registration and so slipped out of my hands. Anyway the search is still on...

I got a gen 2 pajero 2.8, auto, dual ac, sunroof. I suppose so, gets from point a to b comfortably, nothing like my gen3 but not bad.

Why are you buying one? What are you currently driving? How much is your daily utility? Why did you decide on a gen1 pajero? Answer some of my questions and I shall be able to clear all your questions without you buying

Anyway I will try and answer your questions here. Although I would have preferred discussing stuff over the phone since it is a lot easier.

Why am I buying one?
Now I can articulate a lot on that with some very convincing arguments regarding utility and all....but the fact of the matter is the keera in me has become irritable enough and I want to do something about it now

What am I currently driving?
We have two cars, a 7th gen Civic Exi that we have kept for 15 years and a cuore that has been with us for 7 years (its a 2002). Both cars were bought used and have been reliable purchases. The civic has done 222k while the cuore is around 201k. Getting offers of 10+ lacs for civic and 5.30 lacs for cuore.

Daily utility for both cars is around 30 kms more or less. Weekends are mostly spent at home. Although I do try and do minimum 3 tours in a year to northern areas with family and friends. Oil changes and preventive maintenance is mostly done on time... cars stay road worthy year round.

Looking for Gen1 pajero because they are cheap, spacious, comfortable, easy to maintain (or so I have heard), rough and tough and have survived the test of times. Ok that is not the real reason. The real reason is I am a bit hesitant as I have to replace one of the cars since there is only space for 2 in my house. And so I am thinking about replacing the cuore since it is driven less and so if I sell it for something over 5 lacs I have some money that I can put in and take my budget up to around 9 lacs. That should get me a good gen 1 no?
On the other hand if I sell my civic for something over 10 and then I'll have around 14 which should be good for a 2nd gen pajero. I don't mind buying a manual second gen with a 2.8 4m40 or smaller 4D56 turbo although I really want is something that has a 6G72 3.0 L V6.
I have looked at pajeros that have toyota engines...5vzfe for some reason is a favorite...others include 3S, 2L and even saw one with a 1kzTe....but I don't know if that is something I should go for. Intention is to sell what I buy in a year and half and climb up the generation ladder...

Yes I am mentally prepared for that. Yes I would prefer replacing the cuore with gen 2 but that would be out of budget.

So basically you don't need one but you want one. Any used 1st gen won't be a reliable daily for at least the first few months. Once you get issues sorted, it will serve you well but will require workshop visits on monthly basis.
The other thing you need to realize is that unlike your other 2 cars, many parts for this would be sourced from the scrapyard, which is an art that you will learn in time.
I would say that if you have added money, round about 25 to 30k a month to spare, go for it. It shall cover your costs, this doesn't apply to botched up vehicles, nor does it apply to buying cheap parts or the Initial maintenance, this is applicable after that its completely ready.
Since you are tight budgeted, remember that you will need around 200k spare for initial maintenance.
Also make sure you find a cosmetically complete vehicle, scrapyard prices have skyrocketed. Hope this helps. Let me know if something is unclear

Also I will suggest that you use your spare money to buy a third vehicle, fix it up and use it on the weekend, once it becomes reliable, you can then decide if you want to make it a daily or not.

Whatever you buy, buy the owner not the vehicle, look for someone with technical knowledge and that has owned the vehicle for a minimum of 3 years, that way the chances of getting a lemon are less
