
A pedestrian bridge at Khanewal Railway Station collapsed on Friday, resulting in the death of a railway station staff member and injuring a woman, rescue officials confirmed.
The injured woman was shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
According to railway sources, the collapsed bridge was constructed before the creation of Pakistan and had not undergone significant renovations.
Federal Minister for Railways, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, took immediate notice of the incident and ordered strict action against those responsible. In response, Grade-18 Divisional Engineer Abid Razzaq, Grade-17 Assistant Engineer Raja Yousuf, and Grade-16 Bridge Inspector Multan Muhammad Adil have all been suspended.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Minister Abbasi directed for a thorough investigation. A high-level inquiry committee comprising the CEO Railways, IG Railways, and DS Lahore has been formed to probe the matter. Chief Executive Officer Railways Amir Ali Baloch has departed for Khanewal to oversee the situation.
