PASSO vs. VITZ vs. CULTUS

I test drove a manual trans Passo today, 2008 model with newer shape. It was standing besides vitz and I noticed it was similar in size. But Passo somewhat feels like a jeep because everything is so high.

I could not do a high speed drive test though because lots of traffic, plus the guy let me drive only in some streets.

So question for Passo owners: What do you say about drive quality compared to other cars? How does it perform on speed? How is the shocks performance? How is the pick-up compared to the Vitz?

I think I am narrowing down now - cultus is out. So comparison between 2004/5 vitz vs. 2007/8 Passo - Show your vote guys!!

Also, some tips for buying new cars would be appreciated. What should I check for? What to make sure that the car is absolutely genuine? This is the first time I am really buying a car myself, and there are a lot of people out there to rip you off, so all tips are appreciated!

vitz is better option

You can get a good 05 vitz in your budget. There are a few listed on pakwheels. Here are some of the pro's and cons of vitz that I can think of

Pro's

1. Very comfortable and spacious.
2. Smooth drive.
3. Good resale.
4. Parts are easily available.
5. An automatic car makes driving easy in a city like Karachi.
6. Economical on petrol. Gives around 13 easily with ac and may be more if driven at a moderate speed and with a light foot.
7. Spacious.

Cons

1. Side mirrors get stolen very easily and frequently in Karachi.
2. 05 onwards models cannot be driven on CNG.
3. Low ground clearance but this problem can be easily resolved by getting spacers installed.
4. A bit expensive as compared to Passo.

Overall vitz is a very good car and I would buy it any day in this budget. I've owned a 05 vitz since May last year and I love it. Passo looks a bit ugly to me but that is my opinion. I'm not sure but I think Passo can be run on CNG. This may be a plus for some. To me buying a Cultus or Alto is just like throwing away money down the drain. Even a brand new Cultus or Alto can never give you the comfort and drive pleasure that a Vitz or probably Passo will give you.

My opinion

Buy Vitz new shaped coz it has CVT which is jerk free shifting and more fuel efficient. Old shape vitz are simple ATs which gives jerk while shifting and less fuel efficient if compared with any CVT equiped vehicle.

If you have less budget then gor for Daihatsu Mira new shape 4 speed automatic or go for Mitsubishi Ek Wagon new shape(gear on dashboard), it is also 4 speed or go for Daihatsu Essse "X" version it is also 4 speed

This is my opinion, also ask to experts

Thanks for all your opinions and suggestions guys. I finally ended up buying a 2008 model Toyota Passo 1000 cc silver in color. My reasons:

• Cheaper than vitz, you can get a newer model for same price
• more or at least as spacious as vitz
• excellent fuel economy
• good comparison / almost better than new suzuki swift
• up and coming car. looks elegant in good colors.
• very spacious and smooth running.
• no comparison with cultus.

One thing you must consider, seeing that your budget is limited, is the running cost. Sure Passo and Vitz are better quality built cars and have more options than local (cultus) but you will have to keep them on petrol.

I do not need to state that even after the increase in prices, CNG costs almost half the price of petrol for similar mileage. So do consider your daily driving needs (in terms of mileage) before making your decision.

Also, if you go to remote locations/small cities, cultus will have better availability of parts and mechanics that both Vitz and Passo wont. Do keep that in mind too.

So if the above two points are of concern to you, go for Cultus...otherwise choose Vitz/Passo according to your liking.

You don't need CNG with 17 km / L fuel economy. I only need it for the city. Excellent small family car.

@ijazbaig: I have just recently bought and am testing its mileage vigorously. My Passo is with little original mileage (29000 km on Japanese sale receipt), and I have not driven it very much yet. Last 30 km were on jam packed city roads in severe traffic jams, and I got ~ 10.5-11 km/l. Now am testing on more open city roads with 60-90 kmph speeds to see what mileage I get.

I have not replaced my engine oil as yet, and am using same oil / filter as car imported with from Japan. This may be old however, and mileage may increase after oil change.

15-18 km/L figure is the ideal mileage one should get from Passo as per my research and other member's experiences.

i just bought Passo after general recommendation on this forum. its 2006 1300CC, pick, breaking, control and economy is very good. steering column is little noisy on uneven road. any suggestion to fix this, please? 2ndly where i can get fuel and air filters (good ones) in Islamabad. Please help
