Salam Brothers. After all the research i could do, i have decided to go for 2008. I think it is the best option in that price range, and after what i read here, i am confident that its going to be a good decision, inshallah. Just wondering, if the parts are available in the market easily and do we have some good service centers (Karachi) other than the dealership as i think they are overpriced?

1. Parts are expensive and mostly have to be acquired from the dealership. Car is great if you take care of it.

2. DO NOT GO TO ANYONE BUT AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTERS FOR MAINTENANCE!, Only they have the oil that prevents quick degradation of the timing belt (yes it has a belt, a wet belt at that). If the belt degrades creating low pressure situation in the engine you are in for a huge repair bill

I test drove both the Elantra and Peugeot. Booked an Elantra. Both test drives were on 18 month old vehicles. Elantra is just a bigger, more comfortable car. Peugeot feels ( and is) smaller. Small cup holders. Door pockets couldn't take bottles. The ac controls via the screen were plain annoying. But most importantly, the engine vibrations/trembling when you slow down or are inching forward brought memories of my dying belta.

I don't know what will happen to all these cars with turbocharged DI engines when they have done 100k+ km. Really doubt local dealerships will have the expertise to clean carbon covered valves.

Better to stick with old school NA MPFI engines. Especially since it was gonna be an office fleet car

Dont know about this. Never experienced this on mine. Probably the car you drove was kept in a rough state. I drive multiple cars on a daily and 2008 is a as smooth as a butter with that powerful little engine. The only thing i dont like is how the tranny behaves in traffic. I do agree on the ac part with you. It could have been better.

No unfortunately i didnt get a chance. The delaership was pretty busy and it was 45 degrees to top it all off.
I can write to lucky motors like i did last time on the hydrolock issue and hope to pray that they confirm or deny any issues.

Btw Did you get any reply from them ?

I hope you all are doing well.

I am looking forward to buy Peugeot 2008 and would like to get some insights from experts.
I am in talks with Peugeot Metropolis and Peugeot Samma. Both are offering same day delivery on full payment.

1- I have ready somewhere about hydro locking of engine. Is that really something to be worried about ?
2- I am from Abbottabad and will be driving the vehicle here. Roads here are not in best condition and there is always roads on water after a rain. Also there is too much traffic here. Is the vehicle suitable for this terrain ?
3- We have a KIA dealership in Abbottabad, will they offer service/maintenance for the vehicle ? ( Tried contacting Lucky motors for answer but no reply )
4- I don't usually drive much and this will be my 1st personal vehicle so i doubt i will reach 5000km in a year. On 10k , as recommended by the company, should i just change the oil/filers or anything else is required here too. (Keeping in view the low mileage)
5- I prefer SUV instead of sedans. What other options can i get in this bracket ?

1. No, as long as one drive carefully in standing water. The max. limit for standing water is IIRC 185mm incl. any waves generated. If you have ever driven a PKDM civic in standing water, you should be okay. Personally I have seen all cars hydrolock if driven recklessly in standing water.

2. See #1 above for standing water. As for terrian, I cant say much since I drove the car in Islamabad mostly on well paved roads. But if most reviews are positive about the car's drive setup. So I think you should be good

3. I believe so. Metropolis is also a Kia dealer and the service center for both is same. You can call the kia dealership and ask if they have the oil and filters. THE OIL MUST BE PRODUCRED FOR OFFICIAL SERVICE DEALERS. I cant emphasize this ennough . The puretech enigne in the 2008 is wet belt driven and prone to low pressure failure esp. if used with wrong type/ grade of oil. The oil for the 2008 is pretty expensive since it is imported. The filter is still sort of expensive as it is imported as well. YOU DO NOT WANT TO USE NON STANDARD OIL. Buy some from your dealership before hand if the Abbottabad dealership doesn't have any.

4. If you don't drive much, I really can't recommend this vehicle. Simply because of the puretech engine. Now I am not a engineer (for vehicles or engines), my opinion is based on what i have read and seen on the internet. All the opinions are pretty unanimous about the weakness of the puretech engine. If you dont want to read all, just read the TL;DR. HOWEVER if you do decide to purchase stick to 6 months not 10K distance.

TL/DR The wet timing belt 2008 puretech 130 engine is prone to failing as the belt degrades in oil overtime. Short trips (incomplete burning of fuel in the engine and mixing with oil to further degrade the belt, cold temperatures makes thing worse as does using wrong grade of oil and longer service intervals. Things have improved since first gen engines but the belt still fails IF NOT PROPERLY SERIVCED AND INSPECTED. (See below longer version for why this is an issue).

The longer version (do read if you have not read up on this issue): In order to improve NVH in a 3 cylinder engine together with improved efficiency (?), Peugeot engineered the puretech 130 engine with a timing belt rather than a chain and bathed it in oil. The initial series of engines had a belt recall (this was several years ago). Since then Peugeot has improved the belt and shortened belt change periods (this is NOT reflected in our Lucky maintenance schedule sadly). But the belt still degrades. The sad part is that when inquired the Peugeot dealerships are totally ignorant about this issue. They claim it has a chain rather than a belt even if you show them the belt!. If you do decide to purchase ask them this question: Does the engine have a timing belt or a timing chain? And how do they inspect the belt, if they say it has a belt. I sold my car when 2 of the 3 dealerships closed in my city (Islamabad) and the service centre's completely insane reply that this engine has a timing chain!!!!

PS: Lucky reccomends RON 95. The engine in the PKDM 2008 does fine with RON 92. If you do purchase the 2008, i'll send you a link for the intl. 2008 user guide which has much more useful information.

1. If expanding the budget is out of question, then you really don't have much left. Sportage alpha, tucson gls, MG Excite. Really nothing that stands out. The two koreans are so stripped out that it is better to just not consider them unless getting a SUV is a life or death situation. I have not driven a MG Excite so cant say. It is likely to have more features than the Koreans, but I from my exp with the MG HS, the head unit is painfully slow, the DCT isnt the best in the world. So in this price bracket you have really no other option. If you stretch to 8 million, one of the better Sportage or Tucson (though both are still dated), or maybe the Haval 1.5T.

Also to add further, some local Peugeot's are reaching the 75k km marker without any engine problems for now. The recommended belt change interval as per the manual is 160k-180k km if i remember correctly.

I have owned the car for 1 year now without any issues. My friend has it for 2 years without any issue.
So only time will tell how reliable the car really is. If you ask me if i regret getting this car then my answer would be a straight no. I love the drive and persona. Some things i wish they added and made better but then its the same for all global 2008’s.
I am not Peugeot's or luckys advocate. I was among the very first persons to take up the hydrolock issues with lucky and received calls directly from their head office to get a clarification on the issue.
Pure tech issue exists and is highlighted on multiple international sites and forums (lucky hasn't addressed it until now). So make your decision based on all the facts. More reliable Korean option exist so you can go for them if you want a really safe bet.

I hope you are inspecting and checking the timing belt yourself. The tool to check is cheap and even pak post puts a 100% duty is should still be less than 1000 total spent (from ali express)
