Akbari Gate was built by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1566. It was later called as Maseeti gate also known as the "Gate of Merriment".
In around 1964 Mariam Makani, one of Akbar's wife built a mosque outside the gate named after the mother of Jahangir, Mariyam Zamani.
This gate is also referred to as Masti Gate. However this name appears to be tainted form of
Masjidi as it is located in the immediate vicinity of the mosque.
This area is dominated by wholesale shoe sellers who sell both traditional- and Western-style shoes
