Well, I live in a town that is home to three car mags (Car and Driver, Automobile, Winding Road). There are numerous car manufacturers (Lotus, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi, etc) with R&D and emissions testing labs. So it's quite easy to spot the cars, if you know where to look. Also, one of the premiere auction and restoring companies has a showroom in town (RM classic cars). Btw, this is just within a 10 mile radius.
Within one hour driving distance there is the General Motors Tech Center, Ford R&D Labs (Wind Tunnel, Test Track, Design Center), Chrysler Tech Center and Test Track. There are also a few race car manufacturers and facilities of Prodrive, Cosworth, McLaren Engines, Pratt & Miller, etc. Ohh, and I forgot the North American headquarters of VW, Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini. Phew, that's quite a list. Anyways, this is all that I can think of right now, there's a lot more :D.
