The problem with our local UPS' even branded ones like ie homage is that they have imperfect sine waves, they are not true wave-forms and hence they don't go so well with many appliances especially for recharging batteries, laptop or phone, eventually these types demolish the battery. Its also partly the reason why some appliances make a buzzing sound when used on a UPS like this.
I think all APC UPS' are true sine wave ones so they shouldn't have a problem tbh as long as you don't get voltage fluctuations in your area.
The problem i find when the light goes is that my 360 will go into frenzy of flashing red lights, i think the powerpack won't tolerate even those few milliseconds that the UPS takes to kick in (mine is homage). I gotta turn my xbox on again and wait til the game finishes so someone can invite me again! This happens a lot, its happened 100s of times. That's the biggest advantage of the external powerpack. In the case of a PS3, you'd have to swap out the fried PSU which isn't that expensive and is an easy DIY. The console should otherwise be fine.
I'm still trying to find a way where my 360 won't turn everytime the light goes off. Its so annoying. I might try an APC UPS some time to see if that solves it...
