Question about automatic gears of civic

Since the 1970s Oil Crisis all auto trannies come with lock-up torque converters to save fuel. And let me give a very good example to sample the lock up torque converter in your auto Civic. Travelling at 80kmh move the selector to 2 or L and see what happens the jerk you felt and the engine reving higher is the lockup torque converter at work. If it did not have the lock up mechanism then you would not have felt the the jerk of downshifting. And All gear shifts are done with the help of LockUP torque convertors, in lockup equiped trannies.

and if ur buying 2006 prosmatic, than it has an option of 1st gear only aswell, so u dont have to worry at all

Correct me if Im wrong here. Im asking this for confirmation

These are the purposes of all gears ...

D2=Gear 1 and 2 (stop go traffic)
D3=Gears 1,2 and 3 (when you wana rough it)
D=All gears
2=2nd only (if you stop in 2 will the car easily start moving again in 2, even if you hit the gas a bit hard ??? Useful for hills ? )
1=1st gear only (Hmm ... for during parking so it stays in 1st ?)
P=Parking (The gear to be left in when you have parked ?)
R=Reverse
N=Neutral

Someone please confirm this, as this can be usefull If I or anyone else has to drive any auto vehicle.

well i have prosmatic and never had any problem with it. infact i disagree with people saying its bad on hilly areas... i think D3 works the best on hilly areas uphill as well as downhill by providing engine braking (you don't need to push the brake pedal)
well about D2, it does offer more engine braking, help to steer away on slippery surfaces but your car will not shift to 1st gear, even when you stop.
but it isn't a big prblem, if you do want to shift into 1st, use D3 or D instead.

if you keep the selector in 2 it will shift between 1st and 2nd gears. It doe snot mean that you select 2nd and it will only stay in 2nd. So if you stop the auto tranny would start from 1st, not 2nd unless you have specific button in the car which says 2nd starts, that is for starts in 2nd on very slippery or traction problem surfaces (this is usually found in American cars)

2 means only second gear
even when u stop, the car wont shift into first gear

clearly means that the converter is not locked at all times...only after 4th it locks up..

hey guys, since there is a discussion going on about Auto Transmissions, y not someone tell me more about CVT. I have a Lancer 1.6 A/T which uses a CVT. What i've heard is that the rpm remains the same while gears are changing since the shifting is so quick. I've also noticed that i dont get the same feeling when i floor the pedal like i used to get in my prosmatec.

Another Thing, It has a D, Ds, and L. I know D is for Drive, While Ds is for Drive Sporty since i get a rapid increase in the rpm, its for quick acceleration, but would like to know more about this feature. L is for Low Gear.

do not turn my words around, I never said locked, I said it is equiped with the torque convertor. and you said it is not. I stiull say all auto are equiped with torque converter since the 70's oil crisis. And you showing the book says there quite clearly that the car is equipped with a Lock-up torque converter.

As for the 2nd gear remaining in 2nd is 1st for me. This is not how autos work, if you select D3 it does not mean it will stay in 3 and not shift down when you are stopped. It means it will not allow it to go above 3 into the 4th gear. But this what you are showing means this is for second gear starts, but I wonder why there is not a specific notice or warning about it. There should be coz 2nd gear starts are used for slippery or low tractiuon surfaces. And it does state there so. But that kind of defeats the purpose if manual shifting in a auto during races. But I guess they did change that

As for my knowledge I am learning and I learn everyday.

Ok guys here is the answer. Automatic transmissions are built very sensibly. D is usually overdrive gear, means you can drive it anyway you like comfortably. Its the most economical for petrol consumption. D2 (D1 In some cars) is for hilly areas but remember only for low speed also means use it when hill is really steep. Now D3 (D2 in some cars) means when you want your car to use high rev's to change gears. Means sporty ride. Means to tow heavy loads at higher speed. Thats all. Hope to have your question answered. Also remeber in D car won't rev higher because of being overdrive gear, if you press the accelerator to full compare to D3. Thanks!
