Xulfiqar, thank you for your w'screens tip on the jaguar thread. I have never dared fiddling with w'screens on these motors for fear of the screen breaking and more imp, new replacement rubber not being available except on an XJ ( when I DID have these). This was almost 15 years ago and I can't recall the technique used. I know that denters are quite okay with the rope method and don't ask for the services of the "sheeshay wala"

Xulfiqar is spot on about what he is saying. The tape he is referring to is Butyl Tape. OEM Mercedes item even has a copper wire imbedded in it. The idea being that you connect the two ends of the wire to a 12V battery to heat up the wire and making the tape gooey/sticky. Heating is done to remove the old screen and refitting the new one. However the rear screen is fitted with the rope or string method.

I have the original W126 workshop manual (at least part two - body) would like me to upload the windscreen replacement procedure. Back and front screen procedures are different from each other. Of course this may not "specifically" apply to the fintail but may be useful

At the risk of blowing my trumpet..... first opened the picture on my browser by clicking on the picture two times (not to be confused with double clicking). Then saved the picture on my desk top. Opened it with Windows Fax and Picture Viewer. Straightened it. Saved it again on desktop. Replied the post with "go advanced" option and uploaded it in the usual manner. No i-device was involved

Your bumper can ellicit such compliments!!!!

See the thing is .. that with the best chrome work, if the basic bumper has dents, despite them being straightened, will look sloppy. That is the plain truth! But if you are looking for a final look of the car with bumpers to DIE FORthen "new" is the only way to go. It all depends how deep your pockets are. Have a read of this blog:

Getting bumpers imported into Pakistan can be done. Heck Nasir Sheikh got the whole engine from US for the camper that he is restoring. So as I said, how deep are your pockets?

i must confess, this is way beyond my "abilities" ( and I use this word with great reservations!) as an armchair restorer. I have a "normal" 126 ( a 1984 380SEL) that underwent windscreen changes during its refurbishment and I wish I knew these details then...woud have managed to impress the sheeshay wala no end . The rear screen had a bullet hole in it and whilst that may sound dramatic, it was a stray "Hawaii fire" during its derelict days!

Am going to go one step ahead and ask how many pages the 126 workshop manual is and if at some point, it would be possible to borrow it for photocopying...........

youre SO right, this game is very much about pocket depth!!! In an earlier resto' of a W109, I was VERY lucky in that the car actually came with brand new front and rear bumpers separately, as part of the deal, but not here. You've gotten to the bottom of my issue.....I know the current bumpers are no good, ESP the front one. The back one scores about 6 on 10 but...........and i just can't bring myself to do much about it.................except...........to dig deep enough for new or at least better ones than these.

this as thrown a spanner in the works so to say....for now.

I odrered both parts of the manual from USA. I cannot remeber what happened to part one (engine and transmission) . There were two parts but I just can't find the first part!!!

Here is a picture of the manual. As you can see it is pretty thick. At the risk of sounding like a jerk, since these books are as rare as hens with teeth, I hope you understand if I say that I am not comfortable to loan/give away any of my manuals for any reason. However, I'll be happy to do the copying and mail it to you if that is OK. BTW the section on the windscreen repalcement is 10 pages. If you want, I can upload these ten pages to PW.

Going by the sheer thickness of this book, the copying will be a lot of effort etc so now that I know you have it, will just ask for the relevant info at the time which am pretty sure wont be for a while yet if the Fintail has a say in it

And then some rickshaw will ding one or both of them! Right now, these items are a visual disturbance, not to mention deterrent, to further progress! During the week will have them removed and get on with the rest of the work like sound deadening the bulkhead and dealing with a list proverbially as long as my arm!!

Same here, one thing that I noticed was a puddle of water under the radiator. This seems to be coming from an elbow clamped to the radiator outlet. Hummmm .... needs a bit of investigation ... maybe radiator has to come out? But this will have to wait due to othr family issues needing my attention.
