I may have another theory to put forward for the high rate of petrol loss. If the pump was leaking from the side, then it is possible that when the engine is running, the petrol might be ejected from to pump to the atmosphere under pressure. So not only is the pump is sending fuel to the carb plus sending it to the open UNDER PRESSURE resulting in fuel disappearing quickly.
On another note, I think the silicone repair may not be able to sustain the pressure of the pump. Magic Epoxy might prove better and effect a longer lasting repair.
