Restoring a 1965 VW Beetle

Work on the 65 is very slow as Se?or Denter is busy with a rush insurance job on a Swift. I didn't want to disturb his salivating at the prospect of making a quick buck as compared to the inch by inch he has to go thru on a decrepit old odd shaped yesteryear car at the behest of an even more "yesteryear" guy However, am assured he will be resuming later in the week and of that even I am sure.......Eid is approaching!!!!!!

That is just about 12 days or so to go till Eid. Will he be able to complete the work in 12 days? The body still has to lifted off the pan and work has to be done on the "chassis". Then the two have to be united and then the whole car has to be painted :o . Certainly a lot of work still remaining.

BTW, I was admiring the bumpers on your Red VW. Have they been like that from new? Replaced? Refurbished?

The word used was "resuming" which in no way means completion, at least not at THIS snail's pace. At best I can hope the sides will also be done You're dead right, there's still an only too familiar long long way to go; just hope he's done with it by THIS new year!!

The bumpers on the red one are all original and still way better than anything brazil has to offer! So are all the lights and lenses ( as in they are the same ones when the car was new...) except for the headlight units. The chrome sorrounds are original fitment too. The only trim parts to be replaced were the thin chrome strips that run down the side of the car just below the windows. All glasses are original although the front windscreen got shattered during pre- delivery transportation. In those days cars used to be shipped on open railway wagons! Another story:)

That is THE THING about the ONE family car. They are we looked after in a manner befitting their status as an "almost" family member. Once the car changes hands a few times, not always does it fall in the right hands or bestowed with the care it needs. In a few short years it becomes unrecognizable.

i guess it is the nostalgia that such an heirloom can generate....I know of several cars here in Lahore that have travelled the journey from being shiny and new for many years to falling into disrepair and banger category, particularly W123s and 126s.

A quick update to show this protect is still alive. Reason for break in updates was my being away. However work continued in the meantime and the denting is proceeding at what can be best described as snail's pace. These pictures show the current stage.

Yes so am I, esp with the "out of sight, out of mind" mindset ! I think ( and hope!) you are spot on with your time estimate.....but then I feel, that with your experience on bugs, you could do these kind of estimations in your sleep

The polishing continues as does the never ending need for fixing the rot.
The platform itself is SO rotten, that the entire front suspension moves independently of its attachment when rocked!!!

This is the stage where I always start to wonder that I use my head only for keeping my ears apart!

As long as the direction of work is in the forward direction, which in your case it certainly is there is little to be worried about. I wonder that surprises are in store when the body is lifted :o?

Will this car also be getting a full re-trim? It will be nice to do the interior with a subtle twist deviating from everyday run-of-the-mill.

Well It seems that the owner is a bit sober in his/her taste if off white is being pointed at ..... so this one is out .....>

However this one may be more to his/her taste. The idea being that the exterior colour is repeated in the interior... However, if this is also too over the top then perhaps just the piping on the seats matching ext color:P
