since CNG arrived, our mechanics drool over lovemaking with loose tappets, they will loosen them up no matter what. So go to a mechanic and tell him you want such and such settings done, and done properly with precision.

Does anyone know what values we have to ask the mechanic to use? the Standard clearance values or the Reference values for tappet adjustment?

i think the pistons get a crack when they are taken out. this happened with my car, the old one.. it was hyundai excel which i have sold now because of the problems it was giving me.

the mechanic said that when the pistons are taken out they break/crack, dont know why.. :s

Hyundai twin city motors recommended the engine overhaul (i don't know if they did the compression test or no), same did the street guys... so i opted for one. During the overhaul, the mechanic told me that there is a major "play" between pistons and cylinder so we can't even just change the rings alone.. bigger pistons with bore would suffice....
interesting thing is that one of the pistons had a crack and the tappet "Bansuri" was also found broken in overhaul...

seems like a completely trashed engine if the bores were out of round, the rocker shaft was fractured etc. Did you use to run it without changing oil or used to pour "cooking oil" in the sump?

btw - modern compact car engines have serious clearance in piston/bore area - its to reduce friction and this is took over by the engine temperature, the rings used nowadays are chrome type - which means that you need to hone it correctly with a bottle brush hone resulting in a rough bearing surface for the rings to ride on. Seems the mechanics you visited took you and your wallet for a ride.

The Santro engine rocker shaft fractures from backfiring etc causing serious damage sometimes.

did your mechanic took the head & block to a laith machine to get the face polished ???

face is the place where gaskit sits .....

i.e head and block are joined togather ....

so did ur mechanic did any thing with that area as well.....?????

head facing is not always a best idea - most engine manufactured today do not have any tolerance for facing, you remove any material from the head sealing surface and your squish clearance goes bonkers, your CR goes up, you lose the TDC alignment at the cam pulley (unless you use an offset woodruff key).

Xulfiqar is absolutely right my santro was giving white smoke, and oil decreasing issue, almost every local mechanic was recommending a full overhaul, but thanks to experts on pakwheels, the valve seals were changed, and the engine is perfect now, completed 25000 KMs without smoke or oil decrease. local mechanic just loves to overhaul the whole engine, for them the slight oil decrease means engine gone....and need full overhaul, they even don't check the compression or anything else. anyway you overhauled the engine and at least you know that everything is new again which is good for you.
