seems like a completely trashed engine if the bores were out of round, the rocker shaft was fractured etc. Did you use to run it without changing oil or used to pour "cooking oil" in the sump?
btw - modern compact car engines have serious clearance in piston/bore area - its to reduce friction and this is took over by the engine temperature, the rings used nowadays are chrome type - which means that you need to hone it correctly with a bottle brush hone resulting in a rough bearing surface for the rings to ride on. Seems the mechanics you visited took you and your wallet for a ride.
