Those people need to get out of the steam engine era. Oil is used per spec not by "mota tael se set chalay ga"
Hondas spec engine oil in their gearboxes
many european manual gears use ATF
both the above are way way thinner than 75W85 gear oil. It does not mean that they were crazy to spec it. I have repaired a stiff shifting Land Rover Discovery just by draining out the SAE 140 + grease + STP oil from the gearbox and filling up with ATF - the owner and his driver had also heard, never change gear oil and use the thickest available, When I drained and started filling ATF he was bhai aap ko kaam aata nahin hai - yeh danda gear hai aatometik nahin - to which I told him to sit down and be quiet. Once I was done I drove the truck with him for 40 kms. The problem had rectified itself, the reason to drive so long was to show him that the gear is not siezing or doing anything stupid what he was fearing from the thin ATF.
Using a super thick oil will cause damage as it cannot move fast enough in the gears and will also churn due to added friction and heat up. So please use the correct spec if you want reliable service.
