Since 2018 is about to End in a week or two, It is an opportune time for me to share an adventure of mine. Since You Pakwheelers know I restored my beloved Lancer https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/t/my-car-caught-fire/555668?u=omersiddiqui5482 this year and she was standing destroyed by the fire for like July 2017. I daily travel about 50 KMS in Karachi and for me cars are a blessing. I consider them a Blessing of GOD: They Protect us From Bus ki Khuawari, Pick Pocketing in Public Transport, Waiting on the Bus stop and millions of things and after my car caught fire i was in a Dis-array.
My Family has a Spare car But She is too Original to be driven daily on these battering roads so i was a bit afraid to take it and use it as my daily driver.
So I started searching for another car which would be in just fair condition nothing too fancy as my budget was 150,000 and so my expectation were low. I took a look at a lot of FXs and Mehrans but none were upto mark. Charades and Khyber were out of budget and Corolla 74 was not available.
Hence one day an ad came up for this Subaru Justy J-10 1985, The car was repainted and less cared for and the engine was in a bit scary condition but the car was starting in one self, the Hitachi Electrics were fine, all the locks and windows were somewhat working. I checked the car and figured the it required a new radiator, some hose pipes, new rear drum bearing and a whole lot of rubber work..
But the car was real cheap, the Owner (Still have his number saved as Subaru Uncle) advertised it for only 70,000/= and for 70,000/= the body was fine had no major rust issues no holes etc. The car was in Uncle's Wife's Name and the papers were complete and Tax was paid till Dec-2018. So i Bargained a little bit and bought the whole running car for Rs. 50,000/= only and my adventure started.
These are the pics when i brought it home after buying it, Getting the Radiator changed, Heating the thing up on the way, The Damn radiator wala forgot to bleed air, also changed the ignition switch as it was hot wired; Installed a Suzuki One and my god it was a hell of ride back home. i was literally very scared the car was waving side to side as the rear wheel was bubbling due to the bearing, the windsheild was real dirty so could not see, the stupid head lamps were lit but my phones torch was better than that. Filled up the tank on the and surprising the Petrol Tank Cap Indication, and The Door Open Indication on the cluster was working. The Rear Seat Came of its latch, The car has no CNG. Still the upside was, The car had better ride quality than an FX, even with the bad wheel it was better similar to a Charade, Engine was on Petrol so alive and kicking but the muffler had a hole and the sound was horrifying.
Finally came home, Showed the car to my father and he was like you should have given that money to a charity, that would have been rather better than The Subaru. Khair, The car started the next morning and it took it to my mechanic and he even laughed and said "what the hell is wrong with you?" anyways he is an expert with these silly cars, when he open the bonnet and released the Air Box, Turned out the Carburetor was just sitting in the place and was not bolted on and i Said to my mechanic that is why the car was rattling. Khair got all the engine serviced, Oil Changed, Belts changed, Check the Timing Chain since this is a Chain Driven Car, also checked the gear box. and the engine sounded much better plus it was in good health no major work required and that was a relief. Them came the stupid part. Finding rear wheel bearings, There were 4 of them 2 on each wheel and new were not available so had to find them kabli. When We opened the wheel to change the damn thing we knew why the previous set broke, It was due to the fact the the whole Wheel (Rim) was bent. Khair Brought it home the night and took it to Alignment wala next morning for a newer wheel some kabli tyres as these were bad and bald ( what can you expect in 50000) and that costed me about 6000 with the wheels and rear tube alignment.
Now the car was a bit ready, Still the rattling of the missing weather seals on the body but it was reliable and driving. and i stared taking it to work. and driving it back home, Changed the head light bulbs and cleaned the lights so lights were better, The Gear Stick Bushes were gone so had a little difficulty in shifting but things went well until one morning the car heated on the way. Turned out to be a bad T-Stat Valve. and that blew mind off car and i returned home didn't even bothered to take more pics than above and posted the thing on OLX. Sold the car for 55000/= in a week (that is also very astonishing) and saved some money in next two months and bought my self a 93 Khyber which turned out to be rather good still driving the khyber, Lancer is now restored, Khyber is quite reliable and still with me daily with as such no major work required in the car. and i am thinking of keeping it.
