AFAIK, you should follow what car manufacturers guidance is. If they designed the engine with lower fuel RON in mind, it is the right choice. A lower RON engine can use the other fuel, but there will be no benefits, instead loss of money.
Usually, certain cars come with high pressure combustion engines, and thus they require higher RON fuel to burn properly. These engines can run on lower RON fuel too, but due to unharmonised fuel burning, produce a knocking sound.
