I would like to share a recent maintenance experience regarding my Suzuki Swift M13A (Manual Transmission). The vehicle has currently clocked 172,000 KM on the odometer.
Incident & Symptoms
While driving recently, I experienced a sudden change in the clutch pedal feel; it became unusually soft. This was accompanied by noticeable vibrations and a grinding metallic noise emanating from the engine bay.
Upon reaching home and attempting to diagnose the issue the following day, I observed that pressing the clutch pedal while in neutral caused the engine to stall and shut down immediately.
Technical Diagnosis
After consulting with my mechanic, we suspected a failure in the Clutch Release Bearing. Upon dismantling the transmission and inspecting the clutch assembly, the following was observed:
Release Bearing: Completely disintegrated. The inner and outer races had separated, the ball bearings were loose, and the lubrication (grease) had entirely dried out.
Clutch & Pressure Plate: While not the primary cause of the noise, they showed significant wear. As these had not been replaced since the car was acquired in 2016, a proactive replacement was advised.
Parts Replaced & Services Performed
To ensure long-term reliability and "factory-spec" performance, the following components were installed:
Clutch & Pressure Plate: FCC Brand (OEM quality).
Clutch Release Bearing: NTN Brand.
Flywheel: Resurfaced/Machined (Tooling) to ensure a smooth mating surface for the new plate.
Post-Repair Feedback
Alhamdulillah, the vehicle’s driveability has improved significantly. The clutch pedal is now remarkably soft, gear transitions are seamless with no sticking, and the cabin is free of any mechanical noise. The overall throttle response and power delivery have also seen a noticeable improvement.
Cost Breakdown (PKR)
Clutch and Pressure Plate Set FCC Brand 25,000 PKR
Clutch Release Bearing NTN 2,500 PKR
