Excuse. . These are some factoids about the Indian auto industry, courtesy CII(Confederation of Indian Industry) :

India is the second largest two-wheeler market in the world
Fourth largest commercial vehicle market in the world
11th largest passenger car market in the world
Expected to be the seventh largest by 2016
A more interesting factoid is that while China manufactures more cars than India(3to1), India exports more cars worldwide (3to1) than the Chinese. I have posted a chart of car exports in one of the pages in the "What's New..." thread. Methinks the Chinese are great at making prototypes and concepts and very few really hit the streets in large enough volumes. Most of the cars on the streets in China are import brands manufactured locally , which is the same in India too!. The reason why we see "near" copies of so many import brands being showcased by the Chinese auto companies is because many of them are local partners/manufacturers of the global auto brands. The Koreans too are doing great nowadays. The Hyundai car factory placed an ad here in Chennai newspapers for more than 1000 positons in service and manufacturing for immediate hiring recently. The 2nd largest Hyundai factory complex in the world, located here in Chennai is already running at full capacity. Production of the i-20 cannot keep up with demand. Drive by the Chennai Port on a clear day and one can see the gigantic auto transport ships lining up to take the cars outta here from Hyundai, Ford, Mercedes Truck division(Actros range) , Mitsubishi etc. Once the Renault-Nissan plant goes operational Micra cars made in Chennai ate going to exported to all points globally, including Japan!. It's a great time for youngsters her in India aspiring for a career in the auto industry. I also read a news item(which you can google) about Toyota planning to hire 2000 more workers at their factory near Bangalore. The auto industry is fast becoming a major player here.
