The Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" was one of the very first airplanes used as a trainer, initially powered by a 90 hp V-8 engine. The world's first radiotelephonic "plane-to-plane" and "ground-to-plane" communications were achieved by US Army JN-4s:

The Curtiss Model 50 Robin was built primarily for the private market, and a number are still flying. An experimental version called the XC-10 was the first unmanned pilotless radio-controlled test aircraft - the first drone:
