Our next stop was a splendid destination - the Sombrero Galaxy. If ever you get the chance to observe it with the 18" or similar aperture telescope, you dare not miss it. Once you see it, you'll Insha Allah have a tough time forgetting the view. (Image courtesy: Sandbox Observatory)

About Light Years, just like bango sis i only knew the meaning of it, those years are counted in light's speed but you have told something new here that i never thought of, the images we see of those galaxies are old, Allah-u-Akbar, they are not current, wah bhai wah aap ney to hilla ke rakh dia !

Quran says that our earthly 1000 years are 1 day of Allah's Kingdom, Subhan-Allah !

The three previous targets are visible in binoculars; I observed them with mine.

Being under a dark sky lets you see lots of meteors too. The Rutjuga was no exception. (Illustration credit: Wikipedia).

BTW, meteors and meteorites remind me of something. Anyone here from Lodhran?

MASHALLAH very nice and informative thread. I have been to this many times, its Thatta. This place is wonderful but gets scary at nights we also had night stay there and really enjoyed it.

One of our guys had told us when we were planning the stay that there might be dogs in large numbers there which get pretty menacing after dark. But Alhamdulillah sum Alhamdulillah:

• There were no dogs and their orchestra there.
• There were, very surprisingly, no mosquitoes.
• It wasn't cold for the better part of the night.
• The moisture level was surprisingly low for a place so near a large water body.

At around 4am, everyone of us except Khalid sahab and I had dozed off. Then Khalid sahab had to go to his rest-house for some reason and I was alone in the compound. What a feeling it was! Alone under the countless stars among the telescopes and the other astro-gear. I would have surely taken a shot had I known exactly where the camera was - but I did not want to disturb the folks that were asleep. Not to make myself sound like a strongman or something, but it all seemed pretty much normal. Wasn't scary for sure. It was like an ad of an astro-gear manufacturer (if 4am can be considered 'evening'!):

Spend a quite evening with friends . . . a few billion of them.

When I was a small boy I was a star-gazer. On highway trips I used to lie in the back seat and count all the stars on the sky. My counting was weak and could never go above 265 or so. You reminded me that.

But now there is so much smog in Karachi the night is always starless. Even the Three Kings are difficult to find. Just like Enya says, "No spark of constellation, no Vela no Orion" (it is in her track "Caribbean Blue).

Oh BTW I just thought - romance is just useless w/o a star-studded sky. And if you can see the stars on the sky you can even romance yourself (just alone and feel the awe).

This type of threads are rare nowadays. Please keep up with the good work.

Jazak Allah Brother for creating such an informative thread. I never thought I would come across something useful on this website, but now I have.

You are awakening the scientific thought process in us all, the usual Auto-Fuel-Smoke Junkies here. LoL. I remember when I was 8 or 9 years old, I viewed the sky with a binocular and when I saw the full Moon, I can still recall how scared I was, Upclose, It Looked Horribly Scary, full of craters and strange patches, completely opposite of how you think and see the usual moon, I was so shaken up that binocular fell out of my hands and thank God I had the strap of the Binocular around my neck, otherwise my cousin, to whom those binoculars belonged would have been quite upset. I never looked up the sky with binocular ever again.

But later on, as I grew up, I realized how diverse the sky was, and all the wonderful galaxies, and contellations of stars that surrounded us. All of these attest the greatness of our Single Creator, the creator of all the Universe, Allah (One True God), Almighty.
