Today, a party comprising myself, Imraan Ustaad, Irfan and Zulfiqar went "engine hunting". The area of operations was Shoba Bazaar, Peshawar. The objective: to find an engine and gearbox for The Phantom.
For more than a few weeks, I'd been oscillating between a few engine choices. First and foremost, was the Petrol Vs Diesel issue. Next, was establishing a firm choice between 1FZ, 1HZ, 1UZ and 2UZ engines.
The trip to Shoba, removed all doubt from my mind.
The available 1FZ engines available there were 1996-7 vintage engines. Superb, but with automatic transmissions. Price range: Rs. 350,000 (for engine and gearbox).
The 1UZ engines were without pre-matched 4wd gearboxes; requiring mating the engine to a gearbox not REALLY designed for the engine. Vintage was 2003-4. Price Range: Rs. 185,000 (with a 5 speed gearbox).
I have a great deal of respect for the 2UZ. It's a terrific high-speed, eminently-smooth powerplant that churns out a lot of power and torque. The discovered downside: the engine is mated to an automatic gearbox...definitely NOT wanted for the monster tires of The Phantom. Vintage: 2006. Price range: (Rs. 450,000, with auto tranny)
Amongst these engines, the 1HZ was the dark horse of the lot. Let me say, straight off: I have never really liked diesels. Thus, whilst roaming around Peshawar, I had no idea that I'd end up buying a 1HZ. In fact, I was quite certain that I would NOT.
Until...I saw this...
A BRAND new (yes...ZERO meter) 1HZ engine, and connected 5 speed manual gearbox. Friends, let me just say: it's BEAUTIFUL. I simply HAD to have it, because I had NEVER seen an engine this new, this clean, and this "unused" in all my years of being a gearhead. To be truthful, I have never seen an engine in this sort of condition, period. In our neck of the woods, engines like these are simply NOT seen, unfortunately.
I've experienced this engine in two vehicles I've used. The 1HZ is fitted in the 2009-10 HZJ79 diesel TLC pickups, I'd driven in Balochistan. It is also the engine fitted in Army RJMR (70 series) TLCs. The reliability, torque and power of this engine is incredible. And while it has nothing of the sort of low-gear acceleration of an FZ or UZ engine, it fares exceptionally well at low rev torque, and has a very sweet top end speed. It also happens to be pretty much noiseless (when compared to the venerable, but bloody loud 13 B Turbo). In fact, on a recent visit to Kallar Kahar, I was quite surprised at just HOW good the engine behaved both on and off road in an RJMR.
So...The Phantom is not longer an "FJ 405". It's an "HJ 405". And now, I'm officially a diesel fan!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed, that this engine if going to last for the next 20 years!
Photos will follow soon.
Cheers. Fouad.
