Thinking of buying MG HS PHEV – Need advice

Hi, I’m planning to get the MG HS PHEV and wanted some quick feedback. How’s the performance and fuel efficiency in real use? Also, how’s MG’s after-sales service here?

I'd agree to pour in more money for the H6 PHEV. Performance is improved but efficiency I've heard mixed stories. Atto 3 might make more sense if range is not a big concern.

Also, how’s MG’s after-sales service here?

Parts take some time to procure, otherwise everything is okay there. A little pricey but so are all dealerships.

I would not suggest to go for this car. I own the MG HS PHEV and honestly it’s been a huge disappointment. They market it as a true hybrid, but in reality it performs worse than many regular petrol cars. On highway/motorway with 0% battery, the fuel average drops to just 6-7 km/litre at speeds above 120–140 km/h — which is ridiculous for a car advertised as economical. When I asked MG Capital staff, they actually told me to “drive below 40 km/h” to get the claimed fuel average, which is laughable and totally impractical.

On top of that, the paint quality is terrible — my car got scratches within weeks, even from just cleaning with a soft cloth. After-sales support is no better: MG Lounge staff ignore complaints and push you to MG Care, where the repair costs are sky-high for problems that are clearly due to poor quality.

For this price range, the MG HS PHEV is a complete letdown. Poor hybrid system, poor fuel economy, poor paint, and poor after-sales service. Definitely not worth the money.

I do not think that's a paint quality issue as far as an improper washing.

Thank you so much for your review of the hybrid system though. I've been hearing conflicting stories from owners about the fuel average. PHEV are usually not designed to be economical for long routes due to the added weight, that's were an HEV would have suited you better if those are the conditions the car is usually driven on.

Every car’s fuel average will be significantly reduced around 140km/hr speed.

At such speeds all crossovers no matter hybrid or fuel will give less than 9km/L fuel economy .. all hybrids also switch to fuel on motorway and behave the same as normal fuel cars.

But yes MG HS is known to be a fuel guzzler so gives 1-3km/L less than other SUVs/Crossovers in general .

PHEVs use case is maximizing driving within EV range. Once that is depleted you get to petrol driving plus added battery weight . So avg is slightly reduced on long journeys.

Never owned these so can’t tell about the owner ship experience but drove friends PHEV and H6 AWD both. I loved MG seats, they were soft with good under thigh support. H6 seats were less comfortable. Under thigh support was totally lacking. Felt like a small seat. I wont phantom long drives in H6 atleast.

I feel like that's subjective. I personally cannot get comfortable in my HS for long routes and have to routinely stop when going donwhill for extended periods because my foot starts aching from the seat and pedal positions. Don't really feel like theres that much under thigh support either. The seat feels premium though with the materials in the HS

total fake marketing, poor service,
this is not hybrid at all
you can charge 4 hours and get 50 km only which is expensive than current petrol prices

i drove 3000 km and having interior noises from 1 KM Mg center Karachi not even know how to solve the issue, i gave my car 3 time for a whole day and overnight also but problem are still alive.

Engine noise is like diesel car.

i am planning to sell but MG resale in our market is very poor. no one can buy.

regarding combine drive after 40 km speed engine tun on and battery also discharging even my journey to school to home is 15 km on EV mode 15 km range dropped but drive on auto mode battery also dropped by 15 km with unexpected drop on petrol range too

battery not left for hybrid as company claimed 1.6kw always remains as for hybrid system. but it wont work for hybrid actually a single percent not charged from regen

i driven on petrol on 0% charge it gives 6 to 7 km / liter so where is hybrid system i asked to MG they said you must charge your car >>>>

conclusion is waste of money dont even think to buy this car

People buy a PHEV but don’t know the right use case for it.

It’s not a traditional hybrid. Whole point of relatively bigger battery than normal hybrids is to maximize EV driving.

50-60km, whatever it offers.

And ONLY charge it on solar. If your energy bills are zero or very low due to appropriately sized solar system, only then an EV or PHEV makes sense.

Otherwise charging on normal WAPDA without solar is a TERRIBLE idea. Running will cost more than normal petrol cars because of the added heavy battery and low fuel mileage once the battery is depleted.

I’m not sure how good this MG PHEV is after battery depletes on becoming a “normal” hybrid — it likely will be quite bad because of heavy battery and poor/no regen.

Fuel economy of mgs engine isn’t that good either.

Overall it should mostly be used as a city car. Charged on solar only. Taking on motorway or long routes will likely bring out the bad MG petrol mileage..

Most cars above 120-140km/h consume more fuel. Thank that to a lot of wind resistance and added friction, more so if you drive a brick. The suggested speed for ideal economy on a highway is under 120km/h. But this also depends hugely on your gearing and what gear system is your car equipped with.

And this is even further highlighted in a PHEV that has added weight from the bigger batteries, in these cases a simple HEV is most effective. Quite sad to hear these reviews of the car though, it should perform much better even with a depleted battery
