Well this is the draw back of buying used car, that you have to live with includes no manufacture service back up.
You can always check the chasis code and verify is coupled transmission online, All transmissions also have a code. Just like the engine does you would need to check that aswell.
Besides all this the only way to check is the Patern if its PRND21 or PRNDSB.

PS: Steermatic is simply CVT with steering gears no rocket science.
Prosmatec is automatic with out jerks, All Toyota autmatics dont jerk at all, Hondas had a huge jerk at gear change before 2001
So basicly its just manual, Auto and CVt
