Very bad experience in my ativ 1.3 auto

With 4 normally sized persons, my ATIV automatic, just 1500 km driven, full of high octane fuel, and not much luggage even, failed to climb nathia gali governor house road climb (from donga gali side, not from elites hotel side) on a dry road with no black ice.

Switched the transmission on manual mode. In 1st gear and flooring the pedal the yaris did not budge, tyres were not even rotating. Turned off vsc and trc even but same result.

In the end, the three friends came out and pushed the vehicle to safe area and just left it there and went by foot for roaming around.

Never felt that this is as underpowered as today while coming back from naran on friday or in kalar kahar on motorway. Dont know what went wrong, may be hillstart assist had something to do with it but how to turn that off?

Useage of wrong fuel type actually deteriorate the engine performance, fill with regular fuel and try again gain some momentum before the climb to make it further easy.

i doubt fuel quality has anything to do with it, and how to gain momentum when your car breaks down in the middle of an ascent.

I have written about fuel type, the high octane do not gurantee better performance. If the detonation point do not match with engine design high octane will only give a knock to the engine and nothing else. This engine is to be used with regular fuel hence use it to get the best performance out of your car's engine.

But still you can't blame hi octane fuel entirely. We all have used high octane in our econo boxes which required regular fuel but never faced such situations. Even vitz 1krfe 1000 cc with cvt climb that ascend without any issues. I just had to shift from D to S and it climed without any extra effort ma sha Allah. Yaris ativ should have been better than that, no?

PS it was vitz 3rd gen which is quite bulky for that 1kr engine.

When a vehicle with low or average power is combined with CVT, this usually happens. You may not face this issue with 1.5 CVT. If you drive in hilly areas a lot, manual transmission is much better for under powered vehicles.

Personally, I have not driven Yaris 1.3, so I cannot comment much on its power feel.

Apart from the vehicle, if you try to keep momentum before climb, it may not stall completely. Sometimes climbing in reverse also helps. So driving techniques also play a role in hilly areas.

AoA, I am planning to buy a B-segment sedan. Currently using 1.3 Manual GLI, but its getting old in tooth with repair work popping up now after 10 years, and don't want to buy new corolla because of 1. new generation imminent, and 2 . price of course.

So since wife insists on diggi wali car, in B-Segment choice is between Yaris and City.

I just want a hyper-reliable, fuel-efficient car with cheap parts and good local mechanic knowhow, so have to stick with big 3 manufacturer. What is general consensus on 1.3 vs 1.5 engine wise? I don't overspeed or race, but do practice hypermiling, with fast acceleration and then coasting on high gears at low RPM.

The only 2 shaskas I desire are reverse camera and cruise control. Reverse camera can be had as optional on all variants of City but only top of line Yaris, Cruise control is not even an option even in top of line Yaris, but its in all 1.5 City variants.

These are the only reasons I'm considering City, Yaris lack of options is disappointing.

So which variant of Yaris is recommended by users? Personally I only see the value in basic 1.3 Standard CVT or top of the line 1.5 ATIV, middle variants seems "meh" to me.

The middle variant has more stuff loaded then the price difference, definitely worth buying.

The difference of price between Gli and Ativ is for companies buying 25 cars every month since they can get 1 free.

You can get 26 Glis for the price of 25 1.3 ATIV

You are probably right, but I felt the price difference between Yaris middle and top variants is less then City middle and top variants, mainly because of engine size bump, whereas in City you are only getting trim change. So in Yaris' case I would probably go for the top variant, whereas I would not go for City top variant.

Because you are comparing 1.3 ATIV TO 1.5 ATIV

If you compare 1.3 Gli to 1.5 Ativ the difference is almost similar.

City got another bump Because taxes didn't go up on 1.2L variants.

No nothing, no knocking sound

did not notice while TRC n VSC was on, however the TRC n VSC was turned off manually after a couple of tries

No went from Multan via Kalar Kahar Motorway to Kaghan on Thursday, then to Nathia Gali where we faced this underpowering issue the first time, nothing on kalar kahar or mansehra/balakot ascends

I have been to northern areas a dozens of times on every kind of budget vehicle from Mehran to Civic, City and now Yaris. It was in momentum, and was in first gear on manual, the power just started declining. There was no power in engine to move the vehicle forward on 'that' ascend. It was fine again once we were in Nathia Gali-Donga Gali road

I think Yaris' engine design and technology are quite different from previous GLI. I took my Yaris to Namli Waterfall last year with a total of three passengers on board. When I left Islamabad for Murree and took the steep ascents, I initially felt the car struggling to get power, but then I brushed this thought away believing it to be a mere false understanding. Can't really give my verdict on my 1.3 manual Yaris, if it really lacks power or not. But there were certainly some steeps where I found the car struggling to climb in 1st gear when it lost its momentum or had to be very slow because of heavy traffic. Moreover, there were also some steeps where I felt that Yaris was performing better than my previous GLI. Thus, I am till confused about its power on hills. Haven't been to hilly areas with a fully loaded Yaris yet! Utterly confusing!

Been to PC Bhurban from Islamabad airport last year on 1.3 Gli yaris.

There were 3 adults (Including Driver) and 2 Full size loaded luggage bags in the car. The drive did not feel sluggish at all. I think its due to the fact that roads were clear with minimal traffic and the driver know when and where the bends and turns will come and hence know how much power to put pump from the engine before the bend.

also went to Daman-e-koh and monal with 3 adults and one full size luggage bad and still no issue in climbing.

In the end its the driver skill ! I have seen 1.3 manual old school nissan sunny (with 4 adults on board and no luggage) also stall on slopes simply because it lost momentum midway.

however yaris 1.3 engine is different in drive and feel compared to previous 1.3 Corolla engine. i have driven both and the 1.3 corolla Gli engine is more responsive where as 1.3 yaris seems to take longer to respond. just my experience.

I think the difference may be due to old school 4 speed automatic in gli versus cvt in yaris

Tmalik is right. The huge difference in power is because of the engine and acceleration response between the two models.
