Trip to Gilgit, Hunza, Fairy Meadows and Nanga Parbat Base Camp

Believe it or not, we actually drank this water! Long story short, we thought we'll find clean water when we go a little up. But we didn't!
This trek taught us a lot!

After drinking water full of sand, getting disappointed with the blocked trek, this tin of fruit cocktail seemed like a gift from heavens.
Reminded us how lucky we are to have blessings in our lives, which we don't even think about in our normal daily lives...

Total budget was 11,000 per person.
Taking our own tent and our own food was a wise decision, saved us a lot of cash!
We used Jeep only twice
1- from Karimabad to Attabad Lake and back; fare = 3,000
2- from Raikot Bridge to Tattoo Village and back; fare = 6,000
Other than this, we traveled on public transport throughout our trip.

One more thing: we rented cottage at fairy meadows for one night and ate dinner from there (we were hell tired to cook our own food at that time) that costed us 1,000 for cottage rent and 2,500 for one time food for 6 people.

Day 3: We were very disappointed with the first trek of our trip which went unsuccessful, so to cover up that we decided to trek to Eagle's Nest. This time, we left some of our luggage in the local school and started trekking on the road. Reached there at night, around 9 pm after an almost 3 hr trek. Camped at eagle's nest for the night.

Ohhhh seems u have skippd the Sun Set from Eagle's Nest, the best of the best experience could be !!! And what about Sun rise in Karimabad, when Rakaposhi White Top convert into Golden Top ???

Please tell about KKH road conditions and security conditions in Gilgit?

KKH road condition is moderate and bearable. Neither good, nor bad. As far as the security is concerned, there are some issues and measures are in place to ensure safety.

• If you go by NATCO bus, you will have to spend the night at Bashaam to join the convoy in the morning.
• All buses/coasters combine into a huge convoy (usually after Bashaam) guarded by two police mobiles. The convoy is between 25 to 50 buses/coasters which then move together till Gilgit. This gives a huge sense of security to the travellers, hence making the journey safe.
• As you reach Gilgit, you will notice a lot of security personnels and check posts in the city. Again this is to ensure maximum security in that area. However, I would not recommend to wander around the city after 9 PM.
• However, there seems to be no security issue at Hunza. Karimabad/Hunza Valley, all are very safe and one of the best places to visit in Pakistan.
• Generally, people of Gilgit/Hunza are one of the most friendly and helpful people in Pakistan.

Overall, it is safe to travel to Gilgit these days. As far as security is concerned, a lot of extra measures have been taken (as described above). Anyone who wants to visit Gilgit and Hunza should definitely go.

Some more budget breakdown and further information about the trip:
- Rs. 11,000 per person does not include the cost for personal equipment. The cost for equipment (per person) was between PKR 3000 to 4000. The total cost then amounts around PKR 15,000.
- NATCO bus fare was PKR 2200 (to Gilgit).

I would recommend anyone to go for your own cooking. It makes it very economical as well as very enjoyable. Food items recommended are:
- Noodles (Prepare them with soups and enjoy them in the cold weather).
- Ready-to-cook soup sachets.
- Cornflakes with powdered milk such as Nido for breakfast. You can also purchase eggs if your are staying at places such as Gilgit/Hunza (economical) and even Fairy Meadows (expensive).
- Rice packs. We didn't know how to make rotis so didn't bother to take wheat flour.
- Masala sachets such as ready-to-cook biryani/pulaow masala for preparing rice.
- Tinned Chick Peas (Channa) to add to pulaows/rice etc.
- Tea, sugar, Everyday.
- Lots of Tang.
- Glucose.
- Energy biscuits available from local cash and carry (Conventional biscuits are not good when you are doing a 10+ hrs hike).

Agreed, that's exactly what the locals were saying. That we grew up drinking this water. Initially it caused some psychological problems, but then we became used to it as well. and drank the same water for 3 days

We witnessed this sunset while trekking up to Eagle's Nest. And it was hell of a scene. Amazing beauty of the valley.
Unfortunately couldn't see any sunrise...
