Well. for taxi cabs its really very hard to know until you start seeing a flashing hidden lights. But other vehicles are easy to identify if you are a good observer and look in detail. Again its by chance.
Post# 16.. the Impala is undercover officer. in the rear screen two flashing lights on each side /corners are slightly visible. Again if this was in motion its difficult to pin point. some don't have these flashing lights in rear and are actually hidden.
Post#22 are undercover detectives as you can see are full tints and have some very sophisticated antennas at the trunk for satellite and communication. anyone can easily spot these guys.

Post# 24: The Impala. I was driving at the rear. Didn't have rear screen lights but I spotted something else while I was driving side by side with it. The electronic toll tag for police/undercover are actually orange in color. I saw it under the rear view mirror "the orange tag". (H)
Post#25. in my side view mirror, In a busy weekday in Manhattan only a cop car car or emergency vehicles can bypass and drive all the way in one way. Yes the car started flashing later.
well again as I said these are not generic things. I have seen a souped up challenger used by cops, A corvette , Mustangs, Lexus and even a dirty construction van with ladders and tool boxes when it stopped someone and started flashing.
