That 300 SLR must have been quite interesting to drive! Kind of reminds me of the Stratos, you sat at an angle to the road, so you always had a sensation of power sliding.
IMO, a de-badged 500E is perhaps the most lethal of all Mercedes, even Ferraris and Porsches of that era had a hard time coping with it. And the best bit it, it's so effortless trying to get the performance out of it. You just punch the throttle and it goes, HARD! And you could it all day, everyday with nary a whimper from the car. Trying the same stunt in the other exotica would leave you with a huge repair bill for the clutch and transmission!
I have to say though, I'm still partial to cars at the lighter end of the spectrum. Think 190E 2.5 vs. 450SEL 6.9, E30 M3 vs. E34 M5 (OK, I'm lying, I'll take both), Lotus Elise vs. Esprit, MR2 vs. Celica etc. etc...
