Sami, the Pug 404 and the Morris Oxford/Austin Cambridge are virtually identical, no coincidence they are both designed by the same person (I believe, Wiki to the rescue!).
The 404 of course outlasts them both, and has a bigger following, thanks to: better engines and engine range, including a proper diesel, plus a very practical station wagon. What else? Independent rear suspension, front discs, and so on..

Interesting...

A family acquaintance of mine (actually a childhood friend of my Khaloo) had a white one here in Islamabad. He's a large man, and this car "swallowed" him comfortably. The car came to a sad end though, the last time I saw it was near the repair shops in F-10 Markaz, rotting away. No idea where it is now. It had a Karachi number.

My Khaloo and he were once followed in interior Sindh by bandits. To lose them, he dropped a wheel down onto the dirt shoulder kicking up dust. They had a bunch of other escapades in it, thus my sadness at seeing it go like this...

Did you check if they still have the original stuff of the car??

@Storm, well, this car came to Pakistan obviously long before they were offered to the public here. It was driven by a German couple who later lost the car to some officials(imagine that) 'cos of paperwork problems.

And I don't think I've ever heard of anyone mentioning anything older...

I spoke to the late owner. He told me that the car was driven to Karachi and was stopped and confiscated by Pak Customs as owners did not have carnet they were not willing to deposit the security amount required. They chose to leave the car behind and it was later auctioned by Customs. They have the papers somewhere in the house and will look for them. This is least of my worries.

Storm, the car is a great find for the VW community, and we can only pray it is rescued before the Kabaria has his day at 32 rupees a kilo. As far as we know, it IS the oldest car in the country. When was the last time you saw a split window bug?
Karachi has a couple of ovals but not this. BTW does anyone know the fate of the metallic purple(I believe) oval? Originally black and owned by Dr Khan in Defence Phase 5, it was then purchased by a young man working at Instaphone. That was a really clean car. The other of course is the green one, property a Parsi family, and when last sen in 2003, quite a rust bucket.

Mohsin, any chance of getting the chassis number? That will help me identify year of manufacture.

My jaw hit the floor when I saw pics of that beige car. I have seen it around as its close to my home. I just cant believe it would be going to a kabaria.......PLEASE PLEASE someone here buy this gem.....I always thought it must be belonging to some eccentric babajee who would never sell it. It looks like a one hand driven vehicle.

People may not like the shape or whatever but this is too good an example to be scrapped.

Please ask Mr Karim Chapra if he is interested. It is not upto the standards he likes but maybe he may consider saving it.

The split bug is indeed a 51-52 vintage vehicle. The Chassis number may be matched but it shows from a mile.

Can anyone tell how I narrowed it down to 51-2???

As far as we know it really is the oldest VW in Pakistan.

I had done a 'census' of the known vintage VWs in the not so distant past. I think the info was on Orkut (of all places!) and somewhere here on Pakwheels too.

The green Parsi owned oval is a 57 LHD original ragtop. It wasnt a rust bucket by Karachi standards at least but being a daily driver it was a bit rough. It ran a 1974ish VW factory exchange engine.

What is the history of the Purple oval??? If Im guessing right it might be the one Safeershah has. It was lilac when purchased by him.

I think the karachi population of Ovals is around 5 to 10.
