Let this be the example to quote to all of those out there who want to make batman replicas/hot rods/street rods out of these poor vintages and spoiling these beauties to a point of no return.

Please refrain from exercising any molestation/modification to these beautiful vintages as these modifications are too hard to reverse as can be seen above (and getting even tougher every single day). Else the pace with these vintages are being modified (and in the process, I would dare say, scrapped) some day we might be left with nothing to cherish as a true VW Heritage.

A true enthusiast has to be a PURIST as I had said a while ago as well and would never want to modify even a single original bolt.

yesterday i moved all my VW stuff to my new house and i was surprised as to how much stuff is left to go on to my 1303 and thing,... as soon as i can make some room in the driveway i'm goig to bring the cars over too and get to work.

on another note, i used to have to drop fuel into the carb (from the top) of my 1303 if i didn't start her for a few days, but around 2 months ago i got stranded on the side of the road and decided to get to work on the carb. Armed with only a screwdriver and a few other useless little bits i got the 1303 running again. Anyhow, on sunday i went to the farm to visit the 1303 and after 2 months of standing she started on the 5th or 6th crank (fuel lines were dry),... i'm so proud of myself as i was starting to get really annoyed having to always carry fuel around. now those days seem to be behind me.

problem was that my float had been stuck in the up position,... such a simple issue, such a simple fix (stuck mmy hand on the carb throat during idel which filled the bowl and loosened the float. Now the throttle is smooth(er) but the jets need to be changed if i want smooth throttle progression. This time i'm going to be more adventurous and will swap over the 31PICT to the required 34PICT (my car was a 1300DP, but is now a 1600DP). first i need ot rebuild her and ensure the insides are clean,... any suggestions on cleaning the inside of the carb? khalid ustaad uses "sweep" (bathroom cleaning acid).

i'm sure you have a great suggestion on how to rebuild a carb. any imput from you would be like drops of gold.

lol - I would quote my freinds saying "thora munasib karlo bhai"

anyway carb rebuilding - first get a spec sheet for the carb you are rebuilding, then open up everything and mark and label them on a giant piece of paper,

clean out all passageways in the carb body and if the throttle plate is worn - fix that first - now start to reassemble - piece by piece - with the spec sheet infront of you. to seal the throttlebody to the carb body I would use permatex 2 (its petrol resistant and seals up metal joints nicely)

For cleaning - heavily corroded carbs would require a sweeping but usually carb cleaner - an assortment of brass brushes - not steel for Gods sakes. will clean it like new. By Clean I mean surgically clean and every little airway should be shiny.

I have a solex carb repair manual at home in Karachi - it tells you what circuit to tinker to achieve what and the overlapping etc. And do remember to check the heat riser for blockages - if it is blocked - your engine will stall after a few minutes with a perfect adjusted carb.

zaigham is using 175/65R15 tyres from a new honda city on his 1303 and though they are 3.18% smaller than stock they are a cheap and easily available option at around 2000rs per tyre. I'm using 185/65R15 (front) and 195/65R15 (rear) but i've got 5.5inch rims on it. 195/65R15 is nearly the EXACT stock height of VW specified tyres.

my advice is not to go wider than 175 on stock wheels as they will have fitment issues and could rub the inside of the fenders. the honda city tyres will lead ot a little error on your speedo and shorter gears so what you could do is go for city tyres up front and possibly taller tyres in the rear to help increase your gearing ratio a little.

this staggered setup is widely used and accepted and wil lnto affect the handling of your car if it is correctly setup.

ok, so i'm on the right track. will look for permatex 2 in the market. this is why i love your posts, they are alsways so informative. i might take some time to rebuild the 34PICT as i'm not in a ruch to fit it (have a 31 on the car right now). i've rebuilt a few carbs in my time but it's always good to have the insight of the pros,... and none were ever out of service. the 34 carb i have right now has been sitting dead for at least a few months.

i'm so glad i bought a rebuild kit laast year from the UK. WOOHOO!!

i just wish i had more time to work on her. i got home at 8pm and by then i'm physically finished!!

i dono what the problem is with alot of ppl and modifying vw'z. i love vw'z. i might not be a vw restorer but i do like to customize them and i do my job well. just cause some ppl think differently doesn't give them the right to tell me, which i've been told many times tht i am killing them or to tell anyone else. i am giving them a new life and bring them to a new market.

to each his own...however there are two schools of thought / clubs, one who would like to go to lengths to keep it stock and would consider it a cardinal sin if a non-genuine nut or bolt were used. The other club wants to customise it from hell and back. We could find middle ground and say ..as long as its done tastefully..but then who decides what tasteful is? This argument would go on for as long as the two schools of thought exist..and its not just the case with VW's.

i think those cars which have been hacked up and fitted with all sorts of nonsens are the ones which deserve to be shot, but i'll stand by nadirs car. it's a true VW.

B/w as you would put it, thanks to all those modifiers my VW becomes a little more rare upon every modification they do.

this is exactly why i'm never bothered when i see another beetle being torn/cut/shredded up. some call me selfish, but it's their money and no matter how much it makes me cringe to see ruind VW's on the road i say let them be.

nah, a rusted & busted off-white neglected hunk which was destined for scrap. wasn't worth saving but i gave her life anyways (wanted a cheap fun car).
