No I am referring to the vent grills on back of the rear windows (arrow point to them), not the decklid vents.

sorry missed the arrow...they first appeared in 1970 (or was it 1971?)..again, it may vary...

But my 1970 RHD Deluxe doesn't have one of these. But then again...I agree...it varies alright.

I am more inclined to think they appeared in 1971..the decklid slots were probably introduced in 1970...however cars produced for our part of the world may be behind.. The north American cars were probably the first to receive any upgrades / mods.

What I have concluded about the rear vents from my discussion with some owners here in PK is that ( only from a Pakistan perspective) that these came in the 1302 and the 1303 models other than that they were present in the 1970 and above model cars driven/imported here from UK. One of the owners; whenever I say something about his car he goes like " Bhai Yeh London Model Hai".

On the contrary, I am trying to source it for you...who knows you buy a bus which has its speedo missing. On a serious note, just wanted to save it. Sourcing it and stashing it away for someone in VWCOP who might need it someday isn't bad idea. Or is it, at all?

we join hands and we might even be able to assemble a bus..I have doors, dash pod, pop out windows and a number of other smaller items...now all we need is a shell....lets start looking.

69/70 shells didn't have these vent grills. Or did they?

These grills the arrow points to can give a hint as lights, bumpers,decklid, fenders can all be changed...i cant help but think; are the front indicators correct??
Maybe a shot of the interior...seats, headrest or not, reclining mechanism and steering wheel (which we have a slight glimpse of) can help...

mid 1970 the crescent moon "dents" came in the deluxe and in 1973 the actual vents arrived in the deluxe. this would make your car a post-august 1969 production car (which makes it a 1970).

I agree with the first part of your comment but I am positive the 1972 super beetles (1302) had these vents.

You are right, that is why I'd said it came in the deluxes in 73. Supers got both the dents and vents early.

1954 to 1960 6.0:1

1961 to 1965 7.0:1

1966 7.3:1

1967 to 1970 7.5:1

1971 to 1972 7.5:1 / 7.3:1

1973 7.5:1

1974 7.3:1

Compression wasn't entirely specific on model year as vehicles made for markets with poor quality fuels had low compression pistons fit to them.

yep the super 1302 I owned had them, the deluxes (torsion bar susp) had them later, for discussion sake, what was the cut off for the torsion bar setup completely, e.g. 1972 both had fat and deluxe models

another Q - what model bug had the ice pick type door handles (think old Bosch refrigerator style), I just saw an oval bug here in houston with such door handles
