Nice car!
It appears to be a US model 67 with upright headlamps. US was the first market to get the upright lamps in the model year 1967. The door handles are not correct for a 1967

The bumpers, wheel caps, rear bonnet does not say its a 67 Beetle, rather more like a 69 Beetle...

Hi All,

Although i am not new to pakwheels or VWCOP but more of an observer with not much technical knowledge but utmost desire to own some cars in as originality as i can get. I got hold of a bug which i intend to restore but as mentioned earlier have not much clue of bringing it to stock specs as i am yet to learn different variants of VW. I am posting here to seek advice/help from all those who may guide me not only in making me learn as to which parts of my beetle are original and which have been altered, from where can i get them replaced. My direction is first to make this car mechanically correct staying as stock as possible and then move on to body etc. i have had it since 3 weeks now, have managed to get it run on petrol, this car has been in garage for last few years and was run on CNG before that. I am posting few pics so that experts may guide as to its originality first (which of these parts are altered or not model specific, which remind me i also need to be taught on its actual model and specs...

i have changed fuel lines, replaced, fuel pump, serviced carb & fuel tank, installed fuel filter, changed slow jet and a pulley so far....

Thanks for your interest in VWs. Its a lovely Beetle, with simple TLC it can become a daily driver. I hope Dr. Asad is also looking at it. With his assistance in Karachi, this can become a gem of a car. Its a 74 beetle with 1.2 litre engine. If u have the patience, dedication, and last but not least a healthy wallet, this can become your daily driver in no time.

First and foremost... take the CNG out and sell it which would recover some cash for you to spend on your... Change all the fluids i.e. the transmission and brake fluids and the service brakes along with the brake master cylinder... keeping in view the safety first of yours and others on the road... have a VW specialist pump fresh grease into the front beam as well to improve the ride comfort... have the tappets adjusted when you change the engine oil... lastly... if your not going for a body job right now, just get the rubbers on the car i.e. the front bonnet compartment rubber, the door rubbers and the engine rubber replaced...

getting these done would make you confident on the drive of you beetle and enjoy it as well... but their is still no guarantee that it would be 100% trouble free since the car is a few decades old and with lots of history and hence a lot of surprises... happy buggin...

The rear lights on your car are not year correct(plzz correct me if i'm wrong here)... it should be a 3 sectioned tear drop shaped tail light...

Zubeir is right, looks like a domestic spec 74E. That would mean elephant feet tail lights. The E never had the so called tombstone rear lights. it went straight from the 1963 oval to elephant feet, bypassing the 1968 to 1973 era of the tombstone. All Es from 1968 to 1973 soldiered on with the older oval tail light, in 1974 the tail light was standarised across the entire range. One look at the chassis number should solve the mystery.

The car does NOT look like a domestic 74E in some ways..First of all it has the vents behind the quarter windows which were absent in the 74 Economy models. The decklid latch is chrome - anodized black in the E model, chrome bumpers as opposed to painted black ones... The last two items could have been changed by a previous owner however the air vents appear original. The steering wheel is correct for an economy model and the two blocked off holes in the dash also indicate that it was an economy model but maybe from another country.

Thanks Hassan, that is exactly how i plan on restoring this bug...CNG will surely be out but is a necessity right now as its drive on petrol is not what it should be, carb is out as of now its butterfly (don't know actual term) is not working properly plus petrol consumption is heavier than an actual jet, once it settles well on petrol brakes and suspension will be tackled i will keep posting pictures for expert advices. transmission, brake fluids and engine oil already replaced.

can you or any other friend please guide me on following;

where can i get VW specialist pump fresh grease (how will i know if its original)
where can i get rubbers (best/authentic available quality)
any advice on tappets adjustment

my understanding as a lay man is that we are not sure of its variant as yet, will chassis no or any other such detail help? the family which owned this bugs had it since early 80s and claims that they did not intentionally altered anything but could have been misguided by local mechanics for their ease..i being blessed of having a way to contact you guys do not want to fall in the same category and end up with a mix and match type bug...are these tail light not elephant feet rear lights? same pop up when i googled...again m still too illiterate of a bug owner ...

My gut feeling says its a Modern Motors supplied 1974 1200E. Rear lights are correct. The ONLY glitch being the rear ventilation vents (added later?) The chassis number will sort it out, lets get that. Chrome bumpers, wheelcaps, front indicators housings, and decklid handle were chrome for Pakistan, black for other markets. In fact, the other markets got small plastic wheel hub covers, not even proper hubcaps! Nasir?

you are so right...we have military specs Things and US specs right hand drive beetles. i know someone who even found a rare westfalia ah but it was in Afghanistan so it does not count...
