The speedo DIY is *Not* to be attempted! It requires 5 star skill plus in our setup we would end up with a Speedo out of calibration and good for the bin only. Where do we find a speed trap Radar??

Also, the links you post show some good parts which can be bought. Get the early tie rod ends and ball joints are the same. Just do not buy the ones advertised for lowered cars. they are different.

...are they not different? the early ones..upto 66 have a thinner stem than the later ones (post 67)

i think if we just pull out the mechanism clean it n put it back ,it wont affect its accuracy. (if the step 12 is not carried out) :S

Your 66 should be with a ball joint suspension. Link/king pin suspension was offered till 1965. Please check and if possible do share a picture taken from the inside of the front wheel.

 No. One cannot practically go on till step 12. I shall try (no promises) to capture a step by step pictorial guide to what is possible for us since I have to restore a friend's VW's Speedo soon. I had put the condition that he help me, so if he does, I shall ask him to be the cameraman. Last time I restored a Speedo was years ago......the results are superb and worth the effort.

 Many of my DIYs are not documented in pics since I get my hands really dirty and don't have the patience to handle the camera while working.

The pictures you posted earlier shows the lower ball joint clearly. I have circled it in red. To make things clearer for you, the round bottom part (upper in case of the upper ball joint since it is oriented opposite when fixed to car) has been circled in blue. Ball joints are pressed inside the trailing arm which has a round hole to accept the same.

Its a tight fit requiring a press to fit or extract. Also, one needs to have it correctly placed while pressing else disaster can strike (they can pop out or spin inside the hole). Therefore you need a mechanic who is well versed in VDubs to carry out the work under his supervision at the press shop. I warn you since you are spending good effort and money to source quality parts, do not skimp on choice of mechanic please.

Finally, the yellow lines show you where the dust boot was supposed to be on the ball joint in your car. I guess the absence of the same makes the ball joint look hardly like one!!

  One does need four tie rod ends to do one car, so you should have anything 'extra'. 

  However, simply by 'eyeballing' these pics, I am not able to tell whether these are the early or late type. As mentioned earlier......now in local mechanics lingo they are 'patli goli and moti goli wallay' respectively. You need the 'patli goli wallay' ends for your car. I shall revisit the website and try to dig up the pics of what you need. 

  Make sure you ask your supplier that you need the early variety (until May 1968 cars)

This shows a Super bug ball joint (circled in red). Specifically post 1974 type. 1971 to 1973 Super bugs had a slightly different type of ball joint. So 1302 Supers AND the 1973 1303 Super shared the same ball joints and front suspension components.

Note that on Supers the ball joint is oriented downwards, like the upper ball joints of the standard bugs.

Also, Supers have one pair of ball joints against two pairs for standard bugs 1966 onwards.

dear Asad, the supplier was asking me numbers which obviously i did not have... he guessed that i require king pin but patli goli wala i have checked my self in my car... so that wont be a problem... i was really wanted to know about king pin as it cost around 60$

^^ You do not need the King and Link pin sets as already pointed out.

  Many people confuse a 66 with a 65 and vice versa. Yours is a 66 car, first year for ball joints.

What you require is:
1) A set of 4 tie rod ends (patli goli walay as mentioned by asad)
2) A set of 2 upper ball joints (one for each side)
3) A set of 2 lower ball joints (one for each side)

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, some manufacturers make ball joints that work for both upper and lower arms. In that case, you will just need a set of 4 ball joints.
