I've got a regular golf 2.0 gen IV... not a gti but I love this car (and therefore the entire golf lineup) and I just wanted to tell my story here... I studied in Prince George, its a city in the northern area of British Columbia in Canada, and it was my first winter up there. Temperature hit -35 and there was black ice on the road the kind of which I had never seen before. Anyway there I am puttering along early morning when I hit a patch of deadly black ice... lost control of the car at 35km/h... did every conceivable maneuver to try and get the car back in control (believe me I tried everything and I had the time to do it too... the car skidded for about 45 seconds) but nothing worked... the car was aiming for a ditch... I had a choice to simply open the door and step out of the car while it skidded on into the ditch but only rats bail on a sinking ship right?
So I stayed in the car... went down 12 feet... sideways! The ditch had snow and logs and some rocks... anyway when I finally got my bearings right I managed to get myself out of the car and some guys stopped and helped me out of the ditch... called the tow truck who came equipped with a winch and he managed to get the car out after it had been in the ditch for about an hour... he was going to tow the car to the VW dealership when I thought might as well try and start the car... it started the first time. Drove like nothing had ever happened to it and I havent had any work done on it (except for the repairs to the rear fender... the rocks and logs broke its fall) and it has run superbly since the accident alhamdulillah. Here is the other kicker... the car doesnt have a block heater and I spent two winters in PG without having to jump start the car. Never once! I was freaking amazed... Mind you when the temperature went below -30 I would go out and start the car for an hour or so but its still pretty amazing for any car...
sorry if the story seems irrelevant for the thread but I thought I would share my golf story with all of you... cheers... I mean Golf!
