I used table vise for holding the plugs, while pliers for pulling up the ground electrode. For lessening the gap, as Xulfiqar said, tapping lightly until reaching required gap.
Oh and I found couple of metal plates, measured their thickness, and used the one with required measurements (which I recall was 1.1mm).
