Which Generator Fits my Requirements?

Hi Guys,

Hope you'll be great. I'm thinking about getting a Generator (ofcourse due to this sick loadshedding). I'm from Lahore & would need some ideas & thoughts from you guys.

My Normal Usage on Generator will be:
- 3 Energy Savers
- 2-3 Fans
- 2 Laptops Charging + 2 Modems
- Charging on 1KVA UPS (Its not a local UPS, its a nice brand, can't remember the name)

I asked our electrician & he recommended us a 3.5KVA Subaru Generator (Imported). It is a Germen Generator. Cost: Rs. 70,000 (Installation etc. is NOT Included).

He told me there are many Chinese Brands out there (Around Rs. 40,000-50,000 or More) but hardly last for 1 Season, while this Subaru is a Life-Time Deal & will work perfectly.

My Questions are
1). Should I Buy this Subaru? Or
2). Should I research more to get a reasonable Chinese Generator.
3). I would like to add a 1.5 Ton A/C to the above List, in this case, how much I'll have to go Up for KVA?

All chinese generator will give you trouble after two seasons usually you have to changed there engine heads, on the other hands Branded one will be good and long term investment. If you eyeing on Branded generators then there are so many available in market from Elemax, honda, hyundai, yamaha, and so many others. If you want to add 1.5ton ac i think you would need 7kva genset.

3 energy savers = 20x3
2-3 fans = ~100x3
2 laptops = 100x2 (for very big laptops)
1 kva ups = i dont know, check its manual.
1.5ton AC = ~3.5kva

total requirement= 60+300+200+3500+ups

= 4060 + ups(look from manual)
= ~ app 4.5kva ?

so buy a generator with around 6-7kva rating and you should be fine. obviously if a bigger generator is more efficient then change to that. sometimes bigger ones are more efficient due to better technology.

Thanks. I may skip the 1.5 A/C bcoz I guess it will really increase the price of generator, pushing it out of my budget. But all other given points are a MUST.

I saw a generator "Centurion" at Hyperstar. Its build was looking very nice & strong. I know its China, but it had a big sticket "Made in China for USA". It was about Rs. 55,000 (Not sure KVA, but I guess it was around 4.5 or 5 KVA).

Any idea about of the reliability of this generator?

here is a picture of Centurion generator. I saw an exact one at Hyperstar. Priced at Rs. 55,000.

After some research, just realized, Centurion is crap. Checkout some Amazong reviews.

Increase your budget to 82k and get a OES power or Jasco generator both are very good we are using it. There warranty and after sales service are very good too.

Metro have some hyundai and Yahmha generator check them out too. I think they are also running some offer on Yamaha generator in karachi.

2). How much it consumers per hour? What is avg. total expense per month?
3). Does using a generator on gas affects its life & performance? (I've heard on gas, your warranty gets void if you use your generator on gas).

1) Its on duel fuel Petrol + Gas
2) No idea about gas as it hard to calculate from the bill, on petrol 2-2.5L/hr on full load
3) No warranty will not void it will remain intact either you use it on gas or petrol.

P.S OES usage charts says that you can run 1.5ton ac on it. just check it on metro promo magazine.

So what if I have to change the head after 2 years. It hardly costs 1500rs. Bro consider the difference in investment of both. I have a chinnese and it is doing its job. In 70k Op can easily get 5kva. Plus if you go for branded parts are going to be an issue but in chinnese parts are like suzuki mehran parts

Totally agreed with you, but some time maintenance and repair job is not that easy, you know how mechanic works now day's we have to stand on there head and supervise each and every thing. Its all depend on priorites if one one want complete peace of mind he can't get if from a Chinese generator.

P.S we also have Chinese generator, before that we have a elemax which serves us for 7 years after that it was unable to bear the load of whole house we went for a bigger genset 5kva. When we have elemax i have never seen the face of mechanic Now i have very good salam dua to mechanic hahaha Yeah Chinese generator help you improve your social life

Totally agreed with you, but some time maintenance and repair job is not that easy, you know how mechanic works now day's we have to stand on there head and supervise each and every thing. Its all depend on priorites if one one want complete peace of mind he can't get if from a Chinese generator.

Yeah its really hard now days to buy these expensive generator just to for generating electricity on top you have to change oil too.
Simply check the mention watt on you appliances either UPS, PC, Fan and other things which you want to run on generator. The load should no exceed more then 80% of total capacity i think. Subaru is again a very good brand in car surely they have a good genset too.
There are some copy in the market too, so be aware of them do your complete home work before buying. Just ask the model number of genset from you mechanic google it and read reviews.

If u remove the AC from list I think 2.5kva generator will be more than enough for ur needs. btw we have a chinese elemax generator for the last 5 years, aik dafa coil change karvai thi aur bas.... time per oil change kartay hain. its working fit alhamdulilah.
