That is ur vvt actuator.
As said earlier, vvt actuator can cause ratrling noise because of not enough lubrication in the morning on cold start, that rattle is a pin inside the actuator trying to engage. Also clean the vvt filter as u r on the task of inspecting sludge.

I guess ur mecahnic would be having all sort of theroies.

The engine is heavily varnished, what oil are you using and when do you change it?

Am using an oil from Total. Get the car serviced from there so just use their product.
Never really checked exact name of oil.

Now, the mechanic has cleaned the insides and has asked us to get an oil change after 2 to 3 dsys of running the car.
Said all the cleaning debris dislodged will be flushed out by then.
Will go with Shell or Caltex 5w-30 type of oil.

I also just changed oil brand to Revenol fully Synthetic (German) for GLI Auto 2015. Let see how it goes. Bought it recently and previous owner was using Havoline but I figured he was delaying the oil change or may be he didn't change it bcoz he was going to sell it soon.

Now what you have mentioned I also noticed more than usual noise on cold start but didn't gave it any importance, will look at it closely. It could just be nothing.

Yes. Will change oil brand.
But didnt see any sludge or metal scrapings as told by Toyota.
The picture that Toyota showed me at the dealership of the sludge inside my engine were probably from a different car.
Gave me an eatimate of 3.5 to 4 lacs for complete engine overhaul.....

The engine cover also seemed to have not been opened.

This is considered to be sludge deposit in engine. You should use engine flush at every regular oil change interval not exceeding 6 thousand kms in any case. You should use high quality 5w30 engine oil or you may use 5w40 in summer. Dont need to go beyond it unless you observe any oil evaporation loss during intervals. You can switch to Liquimoly MOS2 10W40 later on in case of high evaporation loss of engine oil

It might be a sound produced by starter motor current not getting cut off. It can happen due to bad starter motor or dying pushbutton/ignition switch.

Can we use 5w30 on 1zzfe having oil reduction issue??

its made to run on 5w30, if your engine is using up oil then fix that issue rather than trying to mask it.

Apart from discussiin I think 1zzfe is very popular in US. I saw many videos on youtube in which it is discussed. One person can easily get supporting stuff on internet specially from US. Neither Civic or Sunny is that common . What u say??

In usa the regular corolla had 1zz engine for a very long time, even the 2000 model one had 1zz (metal manifold one)

This post is related to the engine operating noise. I bought corolla 2013 with 38k mileage. Car us periodicalky maintained from toyota GT . They use 20w50 oil for this car. I noticed that engine noise is increasing day by day. Can u please suggest to use a lower grade oil like 5w30 for this model. Current mileage of the car is 76k.
