If the car is continuously reducing oil and producing smoke and there is loss in power...there is no need of compression test.....it is a clear indication that ring pistons are gone...if smoke is at cold startup only that means valve seals are gone...and if smoke is black that means engine is running rich on fuel....
In pakistan we have a habbit that we hear something and then starts recommending it unnneccessarily.....compression test are understandable if one cant find root cause of loss in power etc.... although it is not expensive but point is it is not neccessary everytime....
