Thread: My Vitz(AT) doesn't go beyond 3rd gear

    Default My Vitz(AT) doesn't go beyond 3rd gear

    Sort of the unique problem I am facing as the thread’s subject suggest my car is unable to go beyond 2rd gear (Auto Transmission).
    Car is Vitz 2002 model, drive 80K only. Auto Transmission with CNG.
    Initially shifts are done without any problem but when it goes to 3<sup>rd</sup> it doesn’t change the gear to go beyond this, I have tried accelerating it till 110 KM but of no use.

    Can someone please help me on this???

    i guess vitz A/t has 3 forwards gears

    OD ON or OFF?

    keep it ON for fourth gear, if its a 4sp transmission.

    O/D On means there will be no indication of o/D on the Speedo meter? If that's the case than it hsa the saem problem.

    I'm thinking OD as well?
    Yes OD ON means there should be no light on the dash.. when od is oFF, it says 'O/D OFF'.

    Let me also tell you a little back ground. I have purchased this car recently and the logical reason of this issue which I can think of is the Radiator fan, which is always on (direct). The temperature indicator always shows blue.
    I think this might be stopping the car to drive in overdrive mode because the computer might always thing that car is cold which is not in fact but sensor is showing incorrect value (might be due to disconnection).
    What do you guys think? Does this make any sense?

    Typically, an automatic transmission will not shift into O/D until the engine is warmed up. If the blue light is on, then the control system will think the engine is too cold and not allow the transmission to upshift to O/D.

    You are on the right track I think.

    Get that fixed first and hopefully you'd be fine. If not we'll go further. Get the fan working as it should, check your thermostat valve and check why the PO wired the fan direct. There is no need for the fan to be direct. If the car overheats or something fix the problem. Most probably it would be due to a clogged radiator, just get the radiator serviced and you'd be done.

    Start from the wiring of the fan, after that, check why the fan was wired like that, you'd find out the reason soon, find the culprit and replace / repair (which is most probably a sensor or a relay for which the PO didn't bother to buy the original one and opted for a desi method). Check engine light should no more lit up now. If it does, get the codes checked and let us know.

    Make sure your fan works on time and turns off properly, and I don't know if your car has a mechanical temp gauge or just a blue and red light or both?

    when OD is OFF...car only move on 3 gears...but when OD is ON (mean no YELLOW light in Metre) car goes upto 4 gears
    1999-2004 model cars have 4gears auto transmission

    I believe the poster is on the right track. The direct fan is making the engine run cooler than operating temperature and the transmission is not shifting into 4th.

    Usually mechanics disconnect the Coolant Sensor that makes the fun always run, as ECU detects fault code of absent Coolant Sensor. Just reconnect the sensor and it will be all fine.

    ther a two catalytic converters in u r car they must b clotted so get them cleared and u ll car will shift as u want to .....its stops the air flow volume out of the car thus reducing the performance.

    let me correct you here .....when it displays O/D with orange light on the speedo meter it means the O/D is "ON' other wise its "OFF'

    reinstall the thermostat in the engine and make the fan run automatically.

    You are right on the track that the temperature is the culprit
    The toyota ECT will not allow overdrive to engage if the coolant temp is low - guess what with low coolant temp you will never go into closed loop mode in the ECU and you will end up poisoning the cat convertor - killing the O2 sensor and the excess fuelling you have for a cold engine will wreck havoc on the engine oil too - which coupled with the condensate will turn to acid in short time
