Default Help required regarding Restoration of VW beetle

    AOA
I want to restore a 1969 model Volkswagen Beetle. I have some queries in my mind regarding denting, painting and availability of spare parts in Lahore. Actually the car had been parked in garage for a long time and now we have planned to restore it with few modifications.
What i want to inquire is:

    1. Innovative, expert and cost effective mechanic, denter and painter in Lahore. (Location of specialist VW mechanics will be helpful such as LOS stop etc)
    2. Availability of parts and exact shop locations.

I have heard from someone that second hand parts for VW are not readily/easily available in Bilal Gunj market. Only new ones are available at Montgomry road and Lytton road.
I have read postings from VW fans and especially would request psyb0rg, funkycapricorn, Storm, AsadIshaque, spectra, devilzpassion, romano and other respected Pak Wheelers to help me out here.

    Anticipating a prompt response

    Thanks!!!!

How much are you looking to spend on the car?
    What is the engine condition?

The Lahore members can guide you to a mechanic but it would depend on what grade of work you're looking for.

Body parts for this model should not be a problem and you'll be able to find plenty.

As far as the engine is concerned, all parts would be available new.

    @AsadIshaque
I do have the plan to restore the mentioned VW beetle with some modifications yet i still got in mind, the queries mentioned in the topic earlier. Want your suggestions and opinions regarding that...
Actually the car got welded instead of bolting from the chassis underneth. In order to return it to its genuine configuration, cutting and re-bolting is required. For this an expert denter is required which should be located in Lahore.
Afterwards parts availibilty is the second major issue. Now what are your opinions in this aspect.
    Thanks & Regards.

    @ Storm
Thanks for your moral support. What are your suggestions in this aspect.

Okay…..I sit down to write a longish guideline on this particular car…..

As I have already pointed out, the car looks solid and a very good basis for a very easy restoration project.

I shall keep in mind your figure of rupees 35 thousand and guide you accordingly.

We will not treat this as a project car as such, rather we aim to just freshen up the bits to come up with a reliable daily driver.

    Bodywork:

I cant see any dents or major horrors on the cars body. The floor looks solid too, not perfect as we would want it to be but it should do.

We might very well get away with a thorough checkup for any rusted areas and get some patchwork done. Paint can be touched up as well in any areas repaired.

Its nice to note that you have the know how and can appreciate the fact that the body has been welded to the floor. Hate it as we must, it’s a fact that the majority of beetles on Pakistan’s roads have had this done to them. I think you should not worry about it at this point in time and save this for some time in the distant future.

The reason I say this is a body off restoration costs quite a lot. The cost of denting alone with the body off is quoted at around Rupees 30 thousand plus by the VW specialist denter in Karachi. I think the Isloo guys charge around 20 to 25 thousand. This kind of denting includes all the body and stripping every area of the old paint. Yu see where we are going…… A body work like this deserves a very good quality paintjob too. Preferably bake paint. Now that starts at 20 thousand plus.

So lets leave major bodyworks and a bare metal paint job in the back burner for now. I’m guessing you just need 5 to 10 thousand for the minor bodywork and paint touchups.

    The Engine:

The engine in pics looks quite good as in it is unmolested and clean. Good to see the original generator in place. You say you get oil on the plugs. You can have a desi fix (not really a fix but a way round) for this in the form of plug adapters which simply keep the plugs out of reach of the oil in the combustion chamber.

Oil on the plugs means the piston rings and/or the valves are goners. So we have to go for what is known as a ‘’short-block’’ overhaul in VW nuts’ terms.

Before that, just make a rough observation. With the engine dead cold, grab the bottom large Crank pulley and try to wiggle in back and forth. If you can feel lots of axial play, then you must go for a complete overhaul. If you can feel just a millimeter or so of play, you can get away with a short-block overhaul.

Ill assume you are lucky and the crank does not have much play. The mechanic would take the engine out, take off both cylinder heads and examine the parts. Once the heads are off, its wise to change the piston rings and have the heads reworked at a Lathe shop with new valves, valve guides etc.

The crankcase interior may be cleaned at this point of time for any muck built up during the years. The heads and cylinders would be off giving good openings for the kerosene/solvent to be forced in.

Once the engine is down, its obviously wise to check the clutch and pressure plates and the thrust bearing. Its logical to get new clutch plate lining put on regardless of the thickness of the current one as the lining gets hardened with time.

Apart from all these internals, you would have to get external bits too. Lets make a list:

    1. Fuel filter.
    2. Spark plugs. Bosch W8 AC ideally.
    3. Spark plug wires (you can get away with the old ones but its better to change these)
    4. Distributor Point and Condensor.
    5. New pipes of good quality for fuel.
    6. Fan belt (keep the old one as a spare)

The Carburettor on the car is new Brazilian unit. Shows that the car has had a good life. It can be serviced by the mechanic to give good service.

Ideally the generator should be serviced too and new bearing put in for smooth operation.

A rough estimate for the engine work (minus the list of parts above) would come to around 5 to 8 thousand rupees. The list of parts would cost another about 2 thousand rupees (very rough figures).

    Brake overhaul:

As the cars been parked for a long time, the brakes must be serviced. Provided there are no obvious defects such as leaky Master or Slave cylinders, you would need to get all new rubber washers for the four brake wheel/slave cylinders and a washer kit for the master cylinder.

The brake linings must be ideally changed. You may be lucky if the mechanic tells you the old ones are useable.

The Brake oil pipes must be examined and any doubtful or damaged pieces replaced with good quality units. All the old brake oil must be drained out and the lines flushed with fresh brake fluid. The reservoir may be cleaned too at this point in time.

    Electrics:

The wiring can be checked by a reliable electrician and any repairs necessary done. All the lights and electrics must be brought to life by a good clean and scrub of the contact surfaces. I don’t think there is any major work on this car. If the mechanic is skilled in small electrical work, you may get away without hiring the services of the electrician.

    Small bits:

I see some small bits missing….obviously the horn ring, speaker grilles etc. All may be found at Bilal Gunj with a bit of luck. Let me know if you need something as I may be able to locate in Karachi.

You will need a headlight ring too and the door handles/ window winders etc.

    Suspension:

If the car was running when parked, there are chances theres no major suspension work. Get it checked though. You may be able to delay any work provided its nothing serious.

The car does sit quite high at the rear. It could use a bit of tweaking but lets not go to that side for now.

The front beam has greasing points which must be greased using good quality grease and a grease gun.

    Interior:

The headliner seems ripped / falling off. You can get a new one installed at around rupees 1500. You will need some decent carpeting and seat cover washing to make the interior presentable.

Have I missed anything??? Please let me know…. Sorry I cannot guide you with the local Lahori mechanics as I know nothing of them. The Lahori members can guide you there.

Oh! What kind of modifications are you looking for?? I suggest you do not go for any mods as Beetles look best in their original form and figure.

Best of luck and warm regards

    @AsadIshaque
First of all Thanks for getting deep into this topic. Also for complete part to part instructions.I will definately be considering all your suggestions in this aspect.
Actually i want the cutting and re-bolting be done first. As the front of the car is quite lowered as compared to normal scenerio. From part of the body hits the front tyres while making little sharp turns ( This fault is noticed quite often especially when there is some loading in the car).Secondly the car just require some body touchups and re-painting. (Current paint can also work but i dont like this shade). That is why i want it re-painted.
As far as engine is concerned, We have already installed distance adapters for temperary use. BTW the car is already been modified a bit. May be U haven't observed that.If you carefully observe the rear mud guard panels , u would see that the panels had been extended by 2-3inches. This was done 3-4 years before in order to install some 215-235 size tyres. We have also installed Land Cruiser II front seats. Which are very comfortable indeed. Some modifications were done on the floor mounting for the seats in order to install it properly.
Any ways, by modification i mean some metallic paint, hollow rims with atleast 235 tyres, Chromed bumpers e.t.c.

Its a pleasure to know that you found the writeup helpful.

I think you have a misconception that the welding of the body and chassis has something to do with the way the car sits. There is absolutely no connection.

The rear suspension needs to be reset to bring the car back to suitable stance. Its too raised from the rear which naturally causes the front to be lower down. Setting the rear suspension would improve if not cure the problems up front.

Tires rubbing on the fenders is of course due to the low front height. A VW mech would be able to tweak the front suspension a bit further for optimal operation.

I am not recommending a body and chassis pull at this moment seeing your budget. If the body is lifted off, might as well go with a proper floor job and detailing, something that might put you back by at least 15 thousand rupees (rough estimate). Plus you would need to find a body to floor gasket set. Karachi shops are out of them currently. You can try Lahore or Isloo.

Same goes for the paint. If you want to go for a color change then the best way is a bare metal resto of the body. This again means big $$$$. I would not suggest that since the car can be made to look decent in this paint with few touch ups. It may not be a head turner but it will give you good service.

I did notice the rear fenders being widened and the front seats are an obvious change. The job on the fenders is pretty neat.

In the end its your car, but if you have a budget of 35k then its not recommended that you go all the way for a major rebuild. If you really want to build a car ground up its better that you save one in rough condition from the scrappers torch.

    PS:

I had not covered the rear suspension adjustment in detail before.

You need two pairs of rubber bushings to replace when the rear setup is opened for adjustment. Its best to put new bushings. The job is one of the difficult procedures on a VW and is to done ONLY by a VW mechanic. Needs a good days of work even by an expert.

Expect to pay at least Rs one thousand in labor alone for this work.
