Hi guys,

This is my first post in Pakwheels and I found it to be a great resource.

I need some info from the seasoned users here.

OBJECTIVE:
I am taking a couple of months vacation from work and want to take my family (wife, infant, mother, father, and sister) means total of 5 adults and 1 infant to North areas (I live in Lahore). On the way I might need to pick up a couple more adults, but if I don't have the space I won't.
The factors which are more important to me are as below:

I prefer comfort, reliability, resale and luxury more than performance.
I intend to sell this car after enjoying 4-6 months, so resale is a major factor.
I do not intend to do any major offroading, but you never know!
Automatic transmission is a must!
I absolutely hate doing any maintenance, so the car should be robust and reliable.

BUDGET:
Ideally I would like to have the total cost (including buying, fees and small work which you need to do ont he car after buying) to be less than 2 million. However I can go a bit higher if required.

WORK DONE TILL NOW:

Toyota Surf: I had decided to buy Toyota Surf, but after looking at some 96-99 Surf models I found that they are not very luxurious. Infact they look to be a step down from my current Civic in luxury.
Toyota Vigo: I found the Vigo to be really luxurious, however the open bed bothers me. My other reservation is that I have heard it doesn't have a heater!
Mitsubishi Pajero: Another option is the Mitsubishi Pajero, but I haven't been able to see it in person yet.

For the Vigo, my idea is to get a canopy and seats installed in the bed so it should be able to seat 4 adults in the back, and 5 in the main cabin. I don't know how much the canopy costs, so I would love to hear some ballpark figures.

I would love to hear your comments and valuable feedback in order to help me buy the proper car!

In 4x4s, newer models drop price more than the older ones. IMHO, a mid nineties land cruiser fits your criteria of luxury and comfort along with being dheet. Plus it will be well within your budget.

Let's wait for hardcore 4x4 enthusiasts to comment more thoroughly here.

That would be a good alternative, provided you find a LC mid 90s that is not already beat up, doesn't have a body swap, and will require little to no maintenance.

Let truth be told, when you buy a 4x4, that is from the late 90's or early millennium, there will be no such thing as no maintenance.

Your best bet is to look for a something that runs a gasoline engine versus diesel. I would forgo the Vigos, as they will contain in most cases a D4D Common Rail engine, which is great, but not meant for the dirty diesel available in Pakistan, especially the northern areas.

2 million could get you a nice Pajero, petrol, 7 seats for the big family gathering. You cannot get a cruiser for that much. You may not even get a basic Prado from the mid 90s for that much. Surf is a "no" because its only a 5 seater. Plus, you'll get the most luxury in a Pajero for the amount of money you're able to spend.

Whatever you get, make sure you change all fluids and filters before you head out, engine oil, gear oil, diff oil, brake oil, coolant/antifreeze, washer, oil filter, diesel filter (if you go for a diesel), etc etc.

PS. GET A REALLY GOOD TOW STRAP!!

Yeah, good luck going off road with it. There is no doubt though, will be bloody comfortable!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am dropping the idea of the Surf, and now considering Pajero and Vigo.

Incase of Pajero, I still haven't seen it personally so cannot comment on the luxuriousness.

Incase of Vigo, I still have a few questions:
1. I heard it has no heater. Is it true?
2. Many people mention issues with diesel. I have heard that it affects the nozzle. How about if I change the nozzles right after buying it. How much will it cost, and will it help?
3. I also want to know the cost of fixing a canopy, some seats, and an AC duct. I called up Marks, and they gave me an estimate of around 150k. Are there any cheaper options?

One thing i wanted to ask you, have considered that VIGO has leaf springs in rear as it is meant for heavy loading so the ride is pretty stiff and uncomfortable in the back specially when road gets rough.
And dont know about nozzles but our diesel have high sulphur contents which ruin D4D engines which are designed to run on low sulphur diesel.

Another drawback regarding Vigo, it may look luxurious for driver and navgat but not @ all for the passengers, its entry from the rear doors & visibility is poor in the rear seats (as compared to Prado or Pajero).

My vote is for Pajero 96, hopefully you will get this within your budget, it has rear coil springs, independent suspension and electronic shocks makes it much more comfortable and meets your requirement. Do check how much heat your engine is producing before leaving for North. No idea about the resale, however a clean shot doesn't stays in your garage for long!

go for a good condition pajero. it will fulfill all your requirements. has good seating capacity and more luxurious than the other options you have got.

@MITSU_MAN: Vigo are available for less than 2.5 mill but I am leaning towards Pajero. You being the mitsu_man can obviously advise me about that

Prado 98' all the way, my friend has one, i think its a diesel, his father bought that car over Reborn, and it's a very good suitable option for you. You'll probably end up selling it at the same rate which you bought it at.
