Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. displayed the CVT (continuously variable transmission) version of its Emgrand EC7 series at Chengdu Motor Show.

After hitting the market about a year ago, the Emgrand EC718 has found itself still in short supply because of high demand & limited production capacity. Its total sales volume has surpassed 50,000 cars since its launch, and its monthly sales volume is now stably above 6,000 units.

The CVT version is deemed to further enrich the Emgrand EC7 product mix. Moreover, an all-new factory in Cixi, Zhejiang Province, east of China, is scheduled to start production at the end of 2010, which will rapidly lift the automaker's production capacity.

In the first eight months of this year, Geely Automobile sold more than 240,000 vehicles with a growth of 30 percent year on year. In August alone, the automaker sold 6,258 CK, 5,188 Geely MK2 Kingkongs and 6194 Geely Emgrands, each rising by more than 20 percent from the previous month on average.

139 hp?? civic reborn 1.8 is also 140 hp so it mean this geely is as fast as civic? no?

cant really say anything about this.. and i have yet to come across any head to head comparison of Emgrand EC7 1.8 with Civic 1.8. However the engine information collected from various Chinese websites & forums is below:

Billions of dollars are invested into cutting-edge green technologies every year as car markers are eager to pave their way for future success. As a major effort made by Geely to enhance its competitiveness, the company unveiled its self-developed engine family for models sold worldwide. The technology behind its engines are named as GeTec, short for Geely Green Efficient Engine Technology, that showcase Geely’s capability to fulfill diversified market demand with power solutions ranging from 1L to 2.4L. The GETEC JL?-4G18, a standard 1.8L four- cylinder engine used in Geely’s Emgrand models. The engine was produced in cooperation with a European engineering company which managed to improve torque at low and mid speeds, and improve fuel efficiency by 5%. Total power is 172Nm at 4200rpm, whilst fuel economy is quite low at 6.5l per 100km only.

Customers are gaining confidence in EC7 due to its longer warranty period as they enjoy a 3-year or 100,000 km warranty. The warranty applicability is classified as:

The cylinder crankcase assembly (including cylinder), cylinder head, crankshaft, piston connecting rod assembly, valve train, intake and exhaust manifold, oil pump and filter assembly, transmission assembly, wheels, steering wheel assembly, steering knuckles, seat belts, seat frames and slides, body, front suspension beam assembly, rear axle assembly, enjoy the three years or 100,000 km warranty. The audio component, the cigarette lighter assembly, electric door lock assembly, wiper motor assembly, exhaust pipes, starter assembly, control panel assemblies, switches, relays, power lines, brake disc, the entire vehicle lamps, all kinds of oil seals, brake drums enjoy a year or 30,000 km warranty. And as the whole car glass, tires, parking brake shoe, the whole car paint, batteries, wiper blades and seals are only 3 months or enjoy the 5,000 km warranty. Though consumable parts are not covered under warranty. Monthly sales of EC7 are well above 6000 units per month

^ good catch.. well the engine used in Geely CK & MK is a licensed engine based on Toyota 8A design. However there is no confirmation about the JL4G18 engine (used in EC7) if its based on any Toyota engine or not, i will confirm it if im able to find any such information.

Geely really did turn a new page in 2009 when it decided to take its branding more upmarket and with an expanded product line up that did away with the older cheaper models that Geely had become synonymous with, and in the early days of 2011 we have seen the results of Geelys hard work in a 5 star crash test result for the Emgrand EC7 sedan.

The EC7 is one of the first self developed Chinese sedans that has gained a 5-star safety accolade from CNCAP, the safety body responsible for crash testing cars. The Emgrand EC7 received 13.61 points for a head on collision, 14.41 points for a 40% offset test, 15.8% for the side impact crash test giving it a total of 46.8 points and a five star result from CNCAP. This is not Geely’s first car to achieve 5 stars, the Geely Panda also received a 5 star award when tested.

The price gas in China is practically on par with a liter of locally made wine, Chinese drivers are looking to various widgets to install in their cars to lower gas prices or even moving to lower grade gasoline if they can find it in the city limits. Hybrids are something that never took off in a big way in China, but with local governments offering subsidies dependent on the gas saving ability of a particular hybrid, these 混合(hun he – hybrid) motors are starting to make sense in the real world, the only obstacle being no market ready cars as of yet.

Enter Geely: Geely produced the Emgrand EC7 mid range sedan in late 2010 with a 1.8 gasoline engine, now they are readying a mild hybrid version named the EC7 GSG that has a larger than normal alternator and battery on board which allows for stop/start situations, if you pull upto the traffic lights or a junction and depress the accelerator the engine automatically cuts out and starts again once the accelerator is pressed. This system is considered a mild hybrid but does cut out gas use when sitting idling, it seems like a perfect short term solution.

EC715 will be equipped with self-developed JL4G15D Geely engine, the engine's maximum power is 106 hp and maximum torque is 135 N-m, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. In addition, six airbags, leather seats, steering wheel with audio controls, parking sensor, trip computer, electric sunroof, seat support regulation etc. Geely hasn't given a specific time of EC715's launch yet, however it is expected to be available by the end of this year. The additional offering of a 1.5 liter EC715 will boost the sales of the already successful EC7 series, which is currently available in 1.8 liter (EC718) only..
