It has always been the same since more than 15 years. Each corolla variant starting from 1.6GLI back in 1995 has been DOHC while every single Honda engine starting from 1996 VTi has been SOHC

I don't need to explain myself to you, the simple fact is that the 1.8L Altis failed and could not meet the expectations of Toyota Indus. If you claim that the Altis sold as much as the Civic you'd only be making a fool of yourself.

Pick up a copy of the Dawn Sunday AdBuzz paper and you'll see that the Altis has a resale of Rs. 50,000+ less than a similarly configured Civic.

DOHC is the only way to go for high powered engines. SOHC is an older concept but the modern SOHC engines used in entry level Honda cars are very efficient and powerful (in their given segment). Honda uses SOHC for their entry-level cars like Fit and Civic and DOHC for Accord, Inspire etc.

This new Altis 1.6 seems solid on technical merits; if it comes with ZR engine...and more importantly if it comes "soon"; price will play important role.

• If someone is spending 2 million for top of line variant; he might go for Civic (due to different shape) and not Altis on any day!
• If its entry level variant is not less than Civic; buyers like me (drive myself; not family car; I dont want to look like my dad yet :)) will not consider it...If I have to spend 1.7 million i will definitely go for Civic due to its bigger and better performing engine; different shape obviously

And to answer your question on maintenance, there's no difference in short term maintenance costs.

The only real benefit SOHC would have is reduced weight due to the simpler structure and a cheaper rebuilding cost in case of failure (again due to the simple layout of the engine).

i am a toyota lover, but i have to agree with you. if atlas will offer a much much lesser powered car than civic with same price tag, then even I would go for civic. altis 1.8 should be replaced by 2.0
i dont mind paying 2mil for rolla but only if it is atleast 2.0, but this 1.6 is making me think about civic. let's see what is what when we actually see the product in the market.

The 5 speed automatic gear configuration meant 4 speed forward, and 1 speed backward. The automatic transmission on the 1.6 will be the same as the current 1.8 Altis. This transmission is the international standard for all 1.6 Corolla's. The automatic transmission is gate type shift with super ECT.

The new 1.8 Altis (not coming to Pakistan sadly) has the new 7-speed forward and one speed backward configuration called the CVT-i. It has 7 speeds to achieve maximum fuel economy by keeping the car under 2000 revs even on high speed.

The six-speed manual transmission that was mentioned was actually 5 speed forward and one speed backward. No corolla in the world (except for the XRS although im not too sure) is offered with a six speed forward manual gearbox. Neither is any Corolla in the world offered with a 5 speed forward automatic gearbox.

Hope that clears the confusion. And like Ashfaq87 said, I too am a diehard Toyota fan. But 1.7 million for a smaller engined Altis? Not my cup of tea. Will be going for the Civic VTi MT inshaAllah if this new Altis isn't priced competitively.

That is sad! The 6-speed manual was the only thing that was tempting me to opt for this Altis! Lets see how things turn out to be. If toyota has decided to write 6-speed manual transmission on their website just to mislead potential customers, then i must say that they are a pure breed of morons!

if u say tht 1.6 corolla never came in 6 speed manual...actually it came n its already available in 1.6 1ZR-FE engine in Thailand....or u can search on their website....some of the member even stated tht its coming with 6 forward spd manual gears

Altis has the second worst resale in corolla. 2.0D takes the lead.

One hardly finds any customer for Altis. And if customer is there then you cannot ask for like 18 lacs for a 2008 Altis. Where as 2008 civic Oriel Pros in mint condition is always way above 18 lacs. Thats the difference.

1 question for my curiosity, i knw u r talking abt corolla but i once saw this is lie asking, if u look at the specification on honda website for city it clearly say 5 speed fwd and 1 reverse for automatic, is that a type mismatch or is it correct,
more over if corolla got CVTi tranmision then y are u saying its a 7 speed? wat i knw abt CVT is that it does not have any specific number of gear it have infinate combination....
please tell me wat am i getting wrong?

He is referring to virtually restricted gears. The CVT you are correct doesn't technically have a fixed number of gears, however the software which runs the TCU can make it behave like a gearbox with "X" number of gears. Its the same thing as the 7-speed CVT Steermatic.
