Default Altis 1.8 1ZZ-FE excessive tappet noise

    Hi all,

I have bought a screwed up ALtis 2006 manual transmission with 130k km on the odo.

The car's engine is making constant noise from what seems to be the tappets. (loud chick chick chick sound whose occurrence is related with the rpm)

The car's history is unknown. The previous owner himself doesnt know much but says that the timing chain (which never requires replacement) has been replaced.

I have been to 2-3 mechanics. A prominent mechanic in LHR says that its tappet gap is wide which is also a good thing in this weather. nothing to worry about. it will not increase but may recede with time.

The mechanic at AutoClub I-10, Islamabad says the sound will never go. he himself has tried working with a similar engine. the block and the head will be replaced only then the sound will go.

Toyota Cantt motors LHR said the trouble shooting will require tearing up the engine.

Toyota Rawal Motors RWP said the trouble shooting will start from removing tappet cover then opening head or going beyond that and most likely the Head will be rebuilt with an estimate of around 45,000/-

The tappets ofcourse cannot be readjusted as the engine has hydraulic tappets.

I want to know what should i do. Should i just ignore the problem? which is the best place in RWP / ISB to rectify the problem. and which is better: getting the head rebuilt, buying a second hand head from kabbar or replacing the whole engine? cost estimate of getting a new engine swapped?

any insight into the problem @Xulfiqar bhai please help

The car doesn't have any other problem. accelerates like a jet. gave a mileage of 14.37 kmpl travelling from Lahore to ISB on GT road.

Does changing of valve buckets require overhauling of the engine head?

    UPDATE:

Got the tappets checked from Toyota Rawal. The tappets marked with red have high clearance / gap. Feeler gauge of .50mm was able to be inserted. Altis 18 1ZZFE excessive tappet noise -1695705

Toyota Rawal has recommended the overhauling of the head and has quoted a whopping 110k Rs. for the parts plus labour.

Now the question is whether this job should be performed or another engine may be swapped? if this job has to be performed then what is the best location in RWP / ISB from where this should be done? please share details of mechanics if you possible can.

I think from local mechanic this should be fixed under 15 to 20k. Contact Riaz 0344 8582717. Tell him Waqas gave u his ref. He knows his work very well and will not compromise on good work.

Toyota shops in upcountry are skinning owners like shaving lamb, the valve clearance can be adjust by adding "shims" and new OEM part shall not cost more then 15000 including parts & labour @syncview @SER_GTR

I have found a repair manual for 1ZZ-FE at the following link

    http://www.andysautosport.com/images...p_man_vol2.pdf

It describes the procedure in detail. 1 ZZ-FE does not have hydraulic tappets or self adjusting type of tappets. There are 35 different sizes of valve lifters available that need to be fitted as per clearance between the cams and the lifters.

as per the manual the head cover needs to be removed then the camshafts. then the lifters need to be extracted and replaced.

Now where can i get the job performed in RWP / ISB. Where can i get the original valve lifters (or buckets as some would say). Also i need to get the timing chain tensioner adjusted. Toyota Rawal and Toyota I-8 have both been of no help in this regards and have said they need to open the head. I can go there and show them the procedure and make them follow but i have already lost my trust.

If i could get the right size of buckets then no need for machining or machinist. (for making shims etc.)

Someone has told me about Rasheed Headon Wala behind saddar close to hathi chowk. Does anyone has experience of getting the tappet works done?

Thanks just saw this. now just need to know the place where it could be done. also the manual at the link i posted above contains the same pages however valve lifters of different sizes are mentioned instead of shims. would it be completely safe to use the shims?

Problem solved. Took the car to iqbal brothers engineering works on the road next to railway line behind Saddar Rawalpindi. Got four buckets changed. Sound magically disappeared. The mechanics changed the buckets with kabuli ones. 300 per bucket. The mechanics did not do a fine job.The tappets were within the limits but not fine tuned to ideal 0.20 and .30 mm clearances.
