ok as some of you know i sourced rear drums (posted above) and i've had my EMPIs lying at home for eoms time now so today (as i had a day off) i decided to get off my backside and fit them to the 1303.
the day started badly as i broke my wrench trying to get the rear centra hub nut off (it was tight as hell!), then i borrowed a wrench from my mechanic and broke that as well (his was a heavy duty unit). after many calls between romano, KPsheikh and my various VW mechanics it was Camera Ustaad who came to my rescue. He sent his 2nd in command (Imran) to my house with a correct socket and a breaker bar to open the nut.
while he was on his way i loaded the old rim as well as one new rim into my other car and went to get he tyre swapped onto thenew rim. buy the time i got back he was changing the brake drum on the rear left so soon one EMPI was on, later we turned the car around and did the other side which involved me makeing another trip to wheels & wheels in blue are to get my other tyre swapped.
the reason for such a huge delay was that the rims on my 1303 didn't have the VW spec 4x130 PCD, but rather one of the previous (idiot) owners had fit 4x100 bolt patern rims on it (from an 80's corolla). this is why i waited till i had brand new drums so that i'd not have to hammer out the old studs on the 35-year-old (worn) drums. VW rims bolt to the brake drum with bolts, the ones on my car were bolted in (the nut was welded to the inside of the drum).
anyhow, the 2 rears are on and now i'm deciding weather to fit my fronts straight away (tomorrow) on the original VW drums (35-year-old) or wait for my brand new VW Disc brakes which are lying in the UK,.. most likely i'll do the swap tomorrow as i'm getting impatient and the rears are just looking SOOOOO goood (but honestly the pics are not doing the car justice at the moment - more tomorrow with a proper camera)
