D.i.y cv joint clean up

Hi,
I own a Suzuki Khyber & its left CV Joint was making a knocking sound when making turns so i fixed the problem my self which u too can do.

Step 1: Remove the wheel, turn it to full right if u are working on the left one.
Remove the rubber boot locks using a flat screw driver & nose pliers ( there are 2 of those strip locks).

Step 2: Push the boot towards the engine so that the CV joint is clearly visible:

Step 3: U will observe that the existing grease has turned Black in colour & has lost its viscosity that is why the knocking sound is heard as in the pic:

Step 4: Remove all that dirty old grease By applying WD 40 & a mixture of Petrol + Diesel in a bottle having a pin hole inside the top lid

Step 5:
Apply now new grease, i used a Hi-speed water proof grease courtesy of AMS OIL, USA.

Step 6: Keep turning the hub so that the grease is applied fully infact add some inside the boot after removing the old one from it.

Step 7: place back the boot & the boot ties & have a test drive on bends to hear if the knocking has become silent or not.

you do know that that you are supposed to use CV joint application grease, it has very high moly content in it and is usually a urea grease, the consistency is NLGI-0 or 1, the CV joint is an extreme pressure low speed joint.

this grease looks like NLGI-2 or 3 and is more suited for wheel bearing purpose

Lets bring this thread on top, I like your DIY effort and wanted to put few questions across

1. We know that CV joints fails because of worn out boots and dirt makes its way inside.
2. Do you think it’s a good idea to replace CV joints boots once vehicle has already crossed one LAC and Thirty thousand kilometers without a problem with CV joints.
3. Buy some quality grease, good quality boots and get the job done as CV joint rubbers might would have became weak by this time.

these boots fail with mechanical failure only, e.g. physically getting cut, internal blowout due to grease pressure buildup, meltdown due to joint overheating (bad and incompatible grease causes this).

Use proper CVJ grease in the right quantity and your joints will work for a long time, be sure not to buy $hitty chinese origin joints which have no hardening or any tolerance check.

Yes, I understand if CV joint is already damaged then this exercise wont prove to be helpful. Here, obviously question was asked from experts that if it’s a useful exercise to change the boots and redo the grease once after every one LAC kilometers even if vehicle has no problems. Or it is a useless exercise as CV joint will eventually fail with time no matter what I do.

Firstly understand how the joint works. Its actually stationary when its completely straight - the whole thing is just going round, when you change angle of the rzeppa end then the joint starts to move, its a slow move but extreme high load. Once you get that clear you know when its up for service. It also lives behind the brake disc meaning its grease has to take the brunt of the high brake heat and the heat and load the CVJ makes itself. Regular MP grease doesnt stand a chance there.

If the car is raised above normal height the joint will be constantly working, similarly bad alignment will also cause it to work all the time. That is why your FWD cars usually have 0 camber about 5 degrees ahead of zero to equalize when the car is loaded. Same with toe.

so what do you suggest, is it wise to change the boots and grease. can you please name the reliable greases available in Pakistan for CV joints.

I did not have to replace the grease and boots just for kicks, my own cars had them running for years and years, what I did was make sure that nothing is wrapped around them and the clamps are genuine thick type which require a tool to compress into place. The dalda tin clamps are weak.

For grease there were a few shops on Marriot Rd Karachi which had this grease and some lube agencies also sold it, the problem is that they are in large packs not the toothpaste tubes you want.

Its best practice to check the boots every 2 weeks for any damage, if you see that they are a bit greasy they are leaking, replace them. Usually happens with bad quality boots, road debris hitting it or even the omnipresent "patang ka maanja" getting wrapped around it.

Yes you are right and same thing I was wondering that after market boots are of bad quality and I won’t be able to get good grease , clamps so I will need to cross check the conditions and if rubber looks bad or weak then I will consider replacing it and will try to buy the genuine grease and boots directly from Toyata motors. Nice learning experience as I have never checked the boots for any damages till date.

Find a liqui moly dealer and ask for LM47 grease, its for CV joints. Very good quality too. If you have inner joints in the shape of a 3 prong star running 3 spherical bearings then dont use CVJ grease in there, use wheel bearing grease in there. a medium car like a corolla, liana, civic etc etc usually consume 90-100 grams per joint. For the clamps try to find good quality clamps. The original clamps are very HD but cannot be reused as they are crimped into place.

My car has 265k kms and 7 yrs of age on it. it has been to very rough n tough roads but the CV joints havent ever caused any issue. no clicking sound while turning, nothing! even the boots are perfectly fine. people tell me to get them changed as they cannot last so long but im not sure. OEM boot must be of excellent quality for it to last so long. otherwise, rubber cracks after a few years. or may be the grease is keeping the rubber soft n healthy.

where i get genuine CV Joint boot for mehran, Suzuki dealer in karachi like naseer autos, suzuki south are not giving cv joint parts, they have full axle with rod, joints and boots. i need good quality boot as they become headache to me..... only six months they are staying with me however i try the high or low both quality, they get cracked after few months.

Thats A Sign Of Bad Quality Rubber Used In Boot..Get GENUINE PS Parts...Try Plaza There Are Some Authorized Suzuki Dealers There Or Some Good Shop Who Sell Quality Aftermarket Stuff

most boot failures are also due to bad and overfilled grease which builds up heat pressure inside and blows the boot. Good CVJ grease weighed to measure and good quality boot with nice clamps - and you are good to go.

 Depends upon person to person, normally people tend to sell their cars once it hits this mileage and go for upgrade. I know few people who have lots of money but somehow love to keep their old modeled cars out of love affair. My uncle  owned an hospitals and had lot of money but he would simply not sell his 92 corolla. Finally once he sold it in 2011 out of pressure from family he said that this may be an old modeled car but as reliable and good as brand new  and serves all my purpose. So I think, if you intend to move on with it for some time then better buy new genuine boots from Honda Motors and get it replaced. After all, having reliable machine gives you a piece of mind on long trips. Sorry, I am sort of maintenance freak, love to take my cars on Adventures and never adopt the mentality if I have to sell then all the investment would go to vain.
