Default The Phantom Of City Sadar Road

When I first started this thread, I had just taken delivery of a stock, recently-auctioned 1984 TLC FJ40.

Gaari to khareed lee, lekin I had little/no idea of what I was going to end up doing to the vehicle. For a very long time, I planned to give it a "decent" sort of makeover: something involving some nice tyres, a respectable paint-job, comfortable seats, a roll cage, and that's about it. At that time, little did I know what was in store for me...

Somewhere along the line, this project developed a life of its own. Baaton baaton mein, it metamorphosed from being a quick, run-of-the-mill restoration into something quite ambitious and challenging. Something that was in-your-face, and in-your-guts. Something, the likes of which we had seen chronicled in the pages of Off Roader magazines...but something which we'd never really attempted back home.

This rebuild is STILL ongoing. It's far from over, just yet. But along the way, it's indeed become something which seems to have a life of its own. Ironically, this as-yet-unfinished vehicle has developed a...character.

While it may not be the most ego-stroking fact...a lot of people know "The Phantom...jiss ka maalik woh Fouad Hafeez hai"...rather than knowing "Fouad Hafeez...jiss ke paas woh Phantom hai"

Also, along the way, this vehicle has been instrumental in my making a huge number of friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers alike. Without a doubt, all of these people are gentlemen; sporting enthusiasts, and engine afficianados, and automotive hobbyists...with whom, a common love for the sport, has brought us to common ground. Their support, good wishes, advice, expert opinions, constructive criticism, and attention to detail, has made this hunk of steel slowly emerge into its current shape. I have no doubt that the end product will be a fusion of the ideas and aspirations of all of these friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers. To all of you; my deepest gratitude. It has been (and will be) one helluva ride, so far!

For now, though, this thread (having picked up over 700 replies) is going to undergo some TLC of its own. A chronicle (in pictures) of all the water that's flown under the bridge, thus far, as we progress towards the desired end state (shown in the last picture of this post). Let the photos begin!

And...I think it's about time for some of the photos to change here, too.

Actually, brother...the work hasn't commenced, yet. So far I'm just procuring the hardware that's going to be required, and making up my mind what I intend doing. The vehicle will actually be going to the engine / frame / denter Ustaads on this coming Saturday. I'm sure that there will be lots of pictures, after that.

Quick update: The build has commenced, with the removal of the body from the frame. The engine's been removed, too. Which I'm thinking of re-building, and mothballing for storage. Pictures, after the weekend.

Congrats on wonderful engine purchase! I am very happy that you did not get the 2UZ or the 1FZ engines because I feel that 6 cyl diesels would be much better qualified to drive those 42s and saves you a good deal of money as well. All the best for the build!

Thank you for the good wishes, boss. The build has started in Pindi, where I'm unfortunately unable to personally monitor it from a distance, other than weekends.

To be entirely candid, one of the things that actually tipped my favour in balance of the diesel engine was the fact that I'd just spent a week / ten days thrashing it about in all sorts of inhospitable terrain, where it performed wonderfully well, INSPITE of my being fairly nasty to it. Subliminally, I think a part of me wanted to 'fail' the engine while I was using it in an RJMR, to justify my purchasing a petrol engine, later. A ploy, which clearly failed, itself.

The other thing, which I've mentioned elsewhere, too, is the condition of the engine. Simply stated, it's incredible. I dare say that ANY engine I might have wished to purchase simply couldn't measure up to how new this one is. And while you can tinker around with ergonomics, cosmetics and interior fitments for the entire life-cycle of the vehicle...the engine is one thing you want to be dead reliable. I believe this engine will have just that sort of capability.

Another fact, was burning curiosity, to be honest. I already have a 1FZ-FE in another TLC. While that was a very powerful factor in my wanting to have another 1FZ, ultimately it proved to be an equally strong motivating reason behind buying something different...for an entirely different breed of vehicle. Something along the lines of "ok...let's see which is better, amongst the two"

Let's see how things turn out.

    Fouad.

P.S. Congratulations on the terrific participation by you and NN in the Jhal Magsi Rally. Perhaps, next year, I might enter my FZJ79, too, and see how that goes.

    Default Teesri Moti Kharidaari

By Allah's grace...the build has started.

Today, we went about reducing the Phantom to a rolling chassis. While Nikku Ustaad, Jamil Ustaad, and Imran Ustaad and their team were carrying out the frame strip, I busied myself with purchasing the following items:-

Series 60 Axles (front disc brakes, rear drum brakes)
    Steering Box (Series 60)
    7:37 Differentials (front and rear)
    Shafts
A set of new (yes! Brand new) Series 60 Leaf Springs, for front and rear.
    An additional clutch servo.

Tentative date of completion, thus far is 1st April 2012. April Fool's Day, no less!

    Cheers.

    Fouad
(P.S. Have a happy New Year, everyone!)

    Default A Quick Long-Distance Update

    Alhamdolillah...the work progresses smoothly.

We are stretching the Phantom by a total of 18 inches to accommodate the "king-cabin". The "daala" is going to be a total of 4 feet long, which will allow for a front-facing seat to be placed in the rear. The frame wallah work is ongoing. As is the work on the underpinnings of the vehicle. Nikku Ustaad (the frame specialist) should be starting work on the SOA, in a couple of days, Inshallah.

I have received reports that we've been lucky to find some incredibly clean series 60 tubes for the Phantom. They're so "new", that Aamir Ustaad (the solution provider for all kabaar-walli cheezein) has given a warranty: saab ji...6 mahiney mein agar is mein eik seal bhi lagi, to yeh tubes bhi aapki aur aapke paise bhi waapis. Imraan Ustaad (the mechanic) and Irfan Ustaad (my driver) give me visual confirmation of how good the hardware is. Needless to say I'm very impressed.

    Pictures after the weekend!

    Quick Update:

Will be visiting the Ustaads at City Saddar Road today, to inspect the ongoing work. The rolling frame (or rairha) SHOULD be completed by the end of the day. Today's job should entail the Fixing of all four wheels onto the frame, initial fitting of shocks, and handing over the frame to the denter Ustaad. For the brothers who have been faithfully following this (mostly) picture-less thread, I will be sure to add a huge LOT of pictures.

Since the FZJ79 is in town, will make sure that we include some finished pics of THAT beast, too. If only, just for comparison.

    Cheers.

    Fouad.

Default The Rolling Chassis or "Rairha"

It was a cold, dismally-dreary day, today. No wonder Nikku Ustaad and Jamil Ustaad were reluctant to work!

Magar kiya karein...control nahin hota. So, at 9 in the morning I was at City Saddar Road, sitting in the rain, waiting for work to commence. Also, I was running against the clock, since I was due to leave for Kharian. Lekin, soch rakha tha, ke aaj in wheels ko chassis ke saath laga ke hi jaaoonga.

The results can be seen for yourself.

The work done today, comprised of:-

    1. SOA Conversion.
    2. Mounting of the new leaf-spring set.
    3. Measurements for the placement of the body, and debate on whether a shackle reversal would be in order, or not.

I'll let the photos tell the tale of today.

    Cheers.

    Fouad.

    P.S. The @#$%ing photos aren't loading!

I had promised I would also include some fresh pics of the "finished" FZJ79. These are some of them, for your viewing.

A sincere note of gratitude here, is due to Hamid, for him helping out with the GOLIGHT which is seen fitted on this Cruiser. Thank you, Hamid...God bless you!
