Error - TDC Sensor 1 Noise

Hi All!

Car - Honda Civic 2005 VTi
Odo Reading - 88k kilometers

Symptoms - upon sudden acceleration, upon RPM reaching around 5k, the car misfires, stutters (as if in a limp mode), loses power and eventually shuts down with a check engine light.

Error code - Plugging into the mechanic's scanner, the code generated was "TDC Sensor (1) Noise"

Queries

1- Will changing the crank sensor fix it?
2- What causes it to fail? What was done wrong so it can be avoided.

seems like you've been lazy for scheduled maintenance.

replacing crank sensor will resolve the problem. however on safe side i'd recommend oil & oil filter change at the same time.

causes of failure could be multiple most common is engine heat up due to low engine oil / water pump failure. ignoring to replace will result in bad economy, frequent engine install, finally cranking but failure to start.


in a honda i believe crank sensor is either next to engine pully or behind the engine pully under the lower plastic housing cover.

forgive me for poor knowledge for a HONDA.

check wiring harness for open or short circuit

check if the connection grip is clean and has voltage when IGNITION IS ON

3 and ground - IGN ON - 11-14v

1 & #3 - IGN ON - 11-14v

2 and gorund - IGN ON - 5V

if all check out fine, replace sensor.

AFAIK, there is nothing you can do to prevent this sensor from going bad but still :

never use a hammer
keep water and moisture as far away as possible

Syncview - Took off the connector and found the loose connector to be the culprit. Put it in firmly and now the problem is gone. The car recently had ita timing belt changed and the mechanic probably broke it while disassembling the timing belt cover.

TDC sensor noise on that engine usually means you have to replace both sensors as they are lazy now - Ive had this problem once. did a timing belt service too. In your case it was a loose connection - good that it was a free of charge repair.

The TDC sensor actually is a combination sequence of the crank and cam sensor. If it fluctuates or is misaligned the code generates. In older cars there was a fluctuation sensor for this detection.
